George Washington's Rules of Civility
A friendly reminder of some timeless rules.

Ladies and gentlemen, take my advice - pull down your pants and slide on the ice.

That generally seems like solid advice, but it is awfully detailed.

So, did you send a copy of this to Jim Acosta? Maybe CNN can post this on their employee website.

Having visited Mount Vernon, that came up often in the tours - that Washington was a very detailed person in everything. I think he would qualify as OCD.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Funny you should mention this.

It was so cold the other day, I actually saw a gangster punk with his pants pulled all the way up.

There are too many of them to be practical. The human brain is only capable of remembering about a dozen things at the same time.

IIRC - GW, when a child/student, copied this from an older source as writing practice.

Ben Franklin was also big on lists. Constantly writing and rewriting his rules for living.

General Orders

August 3, 1776

The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing, a vice hitherto little known in our American Army is growing into fashion. He hopes that the officers will, by example as well as influence, endeavor to check it and that both they and the men will reflect that we can little hope of the blessing of Heaven on our army if we insult it by our impiety and folly. Added to this it is a vice so mean and low without any temptation that every man of sense and character detests and despises it.

(Signed,) George Washington

And indicate to whom the rebuke is addressed; to wit:

"Please pull thine fucking pants up, you uncouth baboon's arse."

Interesting. I thought the random and improper capitalization of words was a new thing in American English.

Apparently, George had the same problem over 200 years ago. Wink
