Because many modern cars use the AC system in windshield defroster mode. Some also cycle he AC pump to keep compressor bearing lubed.

With so much to wrong in modern car electrical systems I think OKCGene gave you very good advice here in his post. "After many years of ownership, I've decided it's better to pay a reputable independent garage $100 for a diagnosis to zero in on the problem.

If you don't have one, ask for references, as many as you can get. You want, need, the most honest and decent shop you can find in your area.

Once they've figured out the problem you can decide if you want them to fix it or just take it home and do it yourself."
