Close to my EXACT thoughts when I read she regards herself as an "influencer". Eat a bag of dicks, ya click-baiting hack!!!

So a retailer is prosecuting a person who went in and spent $45 to steal $9 is worth spending $2000 in labor, legal costs and time in order to lose a possible $5000 a year customer that maybe missed an item, once. Probably not happening.

Now if they see the person skip scanning, putting their finger over he bar code and pretending to scan something, and only scanning the low cost items to get out with $200 worth of merchandise for $20, that's probably what they look for more often.

IN fact, I think there is a class action suit against walmart, and one woman did win in court $2.1 million for a false arrest of theft.

You can google this all day long, there are lots and lots of stories about this.

I do NOT like to use the self check out, especially if I have a lot of items, and not because of the work on my part, but for fear that I pass something over the scanner and it does not read it, and I don't realize it, and put the item in the bag. This is a big problem!

If I have 3 items, I can look at the screen and verify it scanned all 3. If I have a cart FULL of items, this is not practical!!
.

No, but you can look at the screen after you scan each item to see if it scanned properly. I do this with each item.

She lost me at influencer and tik tok.

I don't typically buy much stuff so self check out is very convenient for me to get out of the store quick.

Self checkout can go to hell ...I flatly refuse to use that line even though when purchasing one or two items...... Even got into conversations with store employees trying to get me to change checkout lines by telling them to go pound sand and I would use the self checkout when the store put me on the employee roster and start paying me to do a employee job. Or give me a employee price discount !!!!!! They still have to have employees standing around to unlock the scanner when it locks up and has to be unlocked so as to continue..... For every self check that is one less live employee wages and benifits the stores have to cough up.. More profit for corporate and stock holders. ............ If you wish to use the self checkout then that is your option but do not condemn me for refusing to do so............ drill sgt.

35 years in the Grocery Biz, was Store Manager the last 15 or so,

if a grocery store has an LP/AP dept that is funded to allow a AP clerk (read that as mall cop failure) to sit and watch video of the self checkouts to find thieves,, then you need shop elsewhere

why?

because they are too fukking stupid to manage payroll,
put the AP clerk on the register if theft is a problem, he can stop them right their on the spot,

however , corporate stores (read that as big chains) are scared to death to stop a shoplifter now, so they likely wont,

as far as self checkouts, yes, thieves love them, and it takes a dedicated cashier to operate them,

So how does that work with my local Walmart that only has one lane open with 25 people in it so you are basically forced to go through the 20 or so self checkouts?

Lowes and Home Depot have also caught onto this game, last time I was at Lowes you HAD to use the self checkouts, they didn't even have a single live human being in any regular checkout lane. Roll Eyes

I'll use self checkouts when stores give me a W-2 for using them.

My solution is to not shop at Wal Mart. For real. I've been there maybe twice in the past five years.

My local supermarket not only has self-checkout, you can also use a handheld scanner as you shop to read the barcode and keep a running tally of what you're buying. You bag as you go. (Yes, I bring my own bags.)

At the end of your shopping trip you put the scanner on the self-checkout window and it tells you your total, (which I pay with a credit card to get points).

I love it. I'm in and out faster than a teenage boy with his first serious girlfriend.

I’ve used self check at Home Despot, Target, and Costco in the past week and managed to neither steal anything or be accused of stealing anything. Of course shoplifting is a citation out here if it’s under a grand so no worries. Methinks somebody needed content to keep the “influencer” crowd.

Maybe 3-4 times in last 15 years. I hate that place. Only time I go is if I am camping or traveling somewhere rural. You know what you can expect to find at a Walmart. I haven't been to my local one in over a decade.

I would need to find the article, but I read that Walmart alone generated over $100,000,000 by sending accused shoplifters restitution demand letters. But in order to do that they need to have local law enforcement identify them and issue them a ticket in order to determine their identity and mailing information.

So for those asking why they would bother, the answer is for the hundreds of millions of dollars they generate doing so.
