Up until last spring, I hadn’t looked for morels in over 20 years. With everything being closed we were trying to find fun outdoors things to do. Ended up finding probably 2 dozen last year. My kids loved walking the woods, trying to find some. This year, knowing the spots from last year, I’m at 3 dozen. Went out 2 weeks ago and found 18. Today, found 20, with 16 coming from one spot. Probably go out Tuesday morning and check out a few other spots. Anyone else been out this year?

My son and his family have been out at my house and have been doing quite well.
In a couple of visits they have found 4-5 lbs of the blacks

They were out this afternoon and I had a project I needed to finish, but took some time to walk back in the woods with them to see what areas were producing this year.

Maybe Monday night I'll go back and see what I can find.

The hunt is just as good as the eating.

Wouldn’t know it if it bit me on the butt. Wish I did, though. I’m not confident enough to pick mushrooms and eat them.

I can't see them. Well, until I do. Then they seem to be all over. My mother and father used to like looking for them. One day maybe 5 years ago I lucked onto a spot. Found maybe 4 or 5 of them, so I plucked them and took them to her. She was in an extended care facility. She loved it, but I haven't found any since (I don't go looking). Its an interesting hobby, looking for them. And local restaurants pay big bucks.

Did it when I was a kid. We'd fill up a peck basket at grandpa's farm, break out the butter and skillet and fry them up. Fund finding and eating.

Yeah, I forgot the smell of butter in the frying pan. Guess you could reproduce it without the fungus. Heated or overheated butter smell was maybe the best part.

That's a really good idea. Only problem is I don't know what to look for.

I haven't done it in over 30 years, and only with my first gf who was taught by her parents. I never picked it up very well and now any knowledge at all is long gone.

I use to have a secret stash, but someone else apparently found it. I've never seen them there again.

They don't grow here in Gulf Coast Texas. I've never had them.

Are you a fan of mushrooms in general? If so, I would describe them as having a more meaty, woodsy flavor compared to store bought mushrooms. I’ll typically deep fry some in a seasoned flour mixture and sauté some in butter and garlic. Both are delicious.

They're available dried, but are rather pricey. Mushrooms in general dry well.

In the case of morels, I like the dried ones better than the fresh ones.

When I lived in Oklahoma, my hunting buddy and I would start looking for them in late March as we were scouting for the upcoming turkey season. Once we found them they would go into an onion bag. The open structure of the bag allowed the spores to fall out assuring us of new mushrooms on the next trip.
