A bit of lag but not bad. The car does a lot better when you get the engine wound up a bit (1500+ RPM). It is definitely more for road racing rather than a 1/4 mile platform. To me, the car seems much more nimble than the V8 in the twisties. Don't get me wrong here... the Mustang V8 is a GREAT car (a friend of mine owns a Shelby, cool as hell) but the I4 just seems like a really good price performance intersection for my style of driving.

Mustang owner for years... it needs to be a V8. im not a fan of fake, piped in engine noise, that may not be a popular opinion, but get the 4 extra cylinders, you wont regret it

Since you already have a Boxter S with a manual, I see no reason not to get the auto in the Mustang.

Funny thing about the issue in the RS. Ford installed a batch of Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost head gaskets in the RS motors. They're slightly different and not interchangeable.

As far as the engine noise, if it's the same setup as the Focus St, there's nothing fake about it. It's intake noise funneled by a tube into the passenger compartment. It's not a loud exhaust, but at least it's not prerecorded engine noise played through the stereo like some ultimate driving machines. If you find it's not to your liking on the Mustang, Steeda makes a simple kit to block it off for about $30 and there are all sorts of after market exhausts.

Ecoboost nothing but problems that is very costly to fix. Know of too many F series trucks that have issues with the turbo over time so I would prefer a supercharged option in a mustang instead.

Lot's of Ecobeasts on the road and if you read the Mustang Forums, no more issues with them than any other 4cyl out there. Just a lot of unjustified trash talk from the V8 crowd. Check out Mustang6G.com forum, good bunch of guys, lot's of information and vendor support.

If it suits your needs and meets your budget, then I say go for it. Mustangs are hella fun either way and the 10 speed tranny in sport mode shifts like my motorcycle used to... click click click click... up through the gears.

For me, I had to have the sound and V8 power characteristics of a 5.0 Coyote motor but I'm partial to V8's as long as we can still get them. Oh also, guys are getting great mileage with the Ecoboost and that's important as the tank is only 16 gallons. I practically watch my gas gauge go down but my foot is having too much fun on the loud peddle. Smile

When I got my Mustang I was leaning towards the I4 turbo. Had one as a loaner while my car was in shop after being rear ended.

Couldn’t find a I4 convertible equipped as I wanted anywhere close. Ended up getting a better equipped V8 for a great deal, about $10K “more” car for less than $4K more than the I4 I was looking for would have been.

As for Auto vs Manual transmissions, I can’t really see how much difference there is in pumping a clutch vs being in sport mode and using the paddle shifters when you want some fun.

Right about 24K miles on my 2017 and it has averaged 20.8mpg over those 24K. I can’t say enough about how impressed I am at the mileage numbers it puts up.

I think I would be happy with either, just ended up going with the best deal I could find.

I can tell you that for me, running through the gears with 3 pedals is much more fun than a paddle shifter. Paddles have their place (not talking F1/Hypercars) but for me, a 3 pedal will always be more fun.

My 2 cents gives me the right to say, I would guess the turbo would be the weakest link, not the engine. I know a guy who has an 80s something with a turbo. Engine has been fine, turbo replaced.

As someone who has run high boost small turbo engines since when I was a kid (which now includes your 80's) a lot has changed since then. The number one change has been that nearly all modern turbos are both oil and water cooled. The original ones were not and good lifecycle practice was to sit there and let the sucker idle for 5 minutes till everything had a chance to cool down. Drove my wife nuts. But in any case these motors are pretty solid in terms of the turbos. Not that I would in any possible way buy a mustang without a v8 as its not right, but the turbos are not really a serious weak link.

Not really. It's probably leaving some power on the table even. Many many new sedans are running a similar inline 4 with a turbo.
Make sure you test drive a GTI too! They more or less have the same power, and you can fit two regular sized adults in the back.
