Need help trouble shooting Cub Cadet XT2 riding mower Login/Join

I was halfway through a final round of leaf clean up and my Cub Cadet XT2 just flat out died on me at full RPM with the PTO engaged. The engine shut off and will not start or even crank. The digital battery gauge shows 11v. I believe the battery is 12v.

Is this as simple as getting a new battery? The current battery is from 2019.

I’m slightly mechanically included but have every little knowledge with engines and electrical systems.

Where should I start trying to figure this one out?

Sounds like an interlock circuit fault or a shorted wire.

Disconnect the battery and check the voltage at the battery with a volt meter.

Once started, most basic mowers will continue to run.

Mowers with an electric pto, can drain a battery enough to cause problems.

Did it stop WHAM! or did it coast down from full throttle. With blade running it would "coast" down pretty quickly, but it would be noticeably different from a sudden stop.

Does the starter turn it over now and the engine just doesn't start or is it completely dead?




Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

Check your seat switches that keep the mower and blades inoperable unless you are in the seat. Had one break while mowing and the mower shut down completely, this was on an older cub cadet garden tractor.

Put a new battery in it and start from there.I had a similar problem with my Dixie Chopper and you have to have a good hot battery in it.

Yes, start with a new battery from Walmart. I like to top off the charge before using them.

I have a GTX2100 and have had to bypass a few things over the years.

My first issue was a bad ignition switch...if I fiddled with the key, it would work. But would just up and die like you describe. Ended up being a loose wire.

Then had a similar issue in starting circuit. Bypassed that with a straight push-button to starter. Never misses now.

They can be finicky...

Check all your wiring and connectors. Look at the schematics and understand what is needed to keep it running and work from there.

I've learned over the years that I know just enough to cost me more money than I need to spend! HUH! why buy a new battery if you don't know it's bad. Why buy a new electric clutch if you don't know it's bad. My take on it is take it to a reputable mechanic and have them fix it. That way you won't be spending money chasing possible problems fixing things that don't need replacing.

Take the battery to an auto parts store and have them test it, see if it's good or bad, if it' bad, buy one..

If not then it's possibly a number things listed here from a faulty safety switch in the seat to a connection or ignition switch that failed...

There are a bunch of lockouts and safety switches in the newer tractors. I would suspect one of those. Could be PTO, reverse lockout, or seat switch to name a few.

It was a coast not an abrupt stop. Engine does not turn over. Head light comes on but nothing else happens.

I disconnected the battery and got 12.3v not great but should be enough to start.

Im hoping this is the issue. I found a few youtube videos and will test the switch later tonight. I noticed the seat did not have the clicky sound when I sit down.
