I love my daughter and I think she will make a wonderful elementary school teacher one day. My daughter also has the nickname of one point wonder. You see, she misses passing qualification exams by one point consistently. She was born with the cord wrapped around her neck and she has dyslexia and dyscalculia among other issues. She can be sweet as an angel or as mean as a democrat. We noticed the one point phenomenon a few years back when she missed her grade level by one point on some Florida standardized test. Since then, she has failed the high school algebra exit exam twice and each time by one point. She missed a web certification by one point. This week, she took a clep type test where she could get college credit for English and she missed it by one point. I'm not making this up. At the end of this week, she will retake the algebra exam and also take the geometry exam for the first time. My daughter studies and I help her when she asks. She makes A's and B's in her courses. I'm hoping that God will grant her a few moments of clarity where she can earn two extra points. One point to pass and one point for joy. Thanks guys. It may help if she gets those issues evaluated and documented. In many cases, accommodations can be made in testing and such so that she can show that she understands what "typical" testing is supposed to reveal by scoring, but using other methods. But you have to press the system, (in most cases) no one is likely looking for why someone is failing. I had trouble doing some of the math work for similar reason, and did not know that exceptions, assistance or other avenues were available, and was very frustrated with my inability to master math. Being 4.0 GPA for years, and then crashing on Math only to find out later I missed opportunities is regrettable. She has what they call an IEP. She is supposed to get extra time for these exams, but she has to ask and honestly, she often doesn't ask. Beagle lives matter. ______ (\ / @\_____ / ( ) /O / ( )______/ ///_____/

Thank you Very little |
Testing can be daunting for some, my daughter was/is the same, knows the work, but tests for shit and the more she tests (ie license exams) the worse it gets, like you said a few points from passing. Good luck to her in getting that extra point or two

As the parent of an ADHD kid, with some additional issues, I can attest that one of the hardest things can be getting them to self advocate and assert their 504 plan or IEP. I totally feel what you are going through with the one point off situations. I really get your frustrations, and you have my prayers. Also, you have my compliments for being the kind of parent who cares and helps. So many don't get their kids' issues or try to avoid dealing with them. __________________________ "Sooner or later, wherever people go, there's the law. Prayers sent her way. Hopefully she'll pass by 1 point and be able to keep the "1 Point Wonder". Good Luck. ____________________________________________________ The butcher with the sharpest knife has the warmest heart.

I am absolutely spitballing here and know zero about it, but is it possible that she knows what she needs to score and doesn’t? Consciously or subconsciously or whatever? High functioning autism? Again, I know zero about it and just throwing noodles at the wall. Prayers for sure! NRA Life Member "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Teddy Roosevelt

Believe it or not, it was actually one of my kids teacher who suggested the 504 for her. My daughter is an honor roll student but doesn't test well. She's 8 years old and has a poor sense of time and urgency, I blame her mom for that, so she's a poor test taker. Took her to the doctor who wrote her a note, wife brought it to the school and she will take the FAST separately from the other kids, she will take it in the media center where there's less noise and also have more time. The public schools where we live are not very good. Wife researched magnet schools and applied to 5, daughter was accepted to all 5 but with a different OML. First choice she was 134 or so. Second choice she was 3. Ended up with her second choice. The magnet school she will be attending next year is focused on STEM. Whether or not she goes to college is too early to be determined but I want the choice to be hers in the future if she decides to. _____________

Prayers sent. You and your daughter should talk to whoever at the school needs talking to make sure she has the appropriate accommodations for her IEP (Individualized Education Program). My oldest had an IEP through out elementary and middle school. It was a real struggle, but he made it through 8th grade, then didn’t need any accommodations in high school. He’s graduating high school on Saturday with an Associates Degree and was accepted to USF and FSU.
