AVON — A Fulton County Sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed while responding to a call in rural Fulton County on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Troy Chisum was at a residence between Avon and Ellisville about 2 p.m. on a report of a battery and disturbance when multiple shots were fired and he was fatally wounded, according to a statement by Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard.

More than 100 police officers, deputies and first responders from more than dozen departments lined North Bradley Avenue near OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center to show their respect for their fallen colleague. Hospital staff also stood on the sidewalk watching. Officers from Peoria, Peoria County, Peoria Heights, Bartonville, Woodford County, Tazewell County, Knox County, Fulton County, state police and others escorted the ambulance that was carrying Chisum’s body to the hospital.

Once there, the officers stood at attention and saluted as his body was brought into the building.

Chisum, 39, was a four and a half year veteran of the sheriff’s office. The circumstances that led to the shooting weren’t immediately clear.

The situation at the house in the 5200 block of Troy Road about an hour west of Peoria was described by Illinois State Police spokeswoman Mindy Carroll as “ongoing,” according to a live-stream of a brief news conference held by the ISP in Fairview.

“On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum. Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will be forever remembered,” Standard said in the statement.

Chisum was also a paramedic with the Fulton County Emergency Management Agency and a member of the West Central Special Response Team, the statement said. He served on ILEAS WMD/SRT Team, Region Six as well.

Police from multiple agencies had the house on Troy Road surrounded for most of the afternoon. The result of that apparent standoff was not immediately clear. A LifeFlight helicopter was also called to the scene during the afternoon.

Two people were reportedly brought to the Galesburg Police Department, as they were possibly linked to the Avon incident. Galesburg police Lt. James Bradford said the subjects were being interviewed by other law enforcement agencies and none of the subjects were under arrest as of 4:35 p.m. Tuesday.

To many recent officer involved lately. So common the media doesn't make an effort to report them. RIP

To those still active, get home safe.

If people would mind their own damn business this country would be better off. I owe no one an explanation or an apology for my personal opinion.
