Routine procedure. Anesthetize unrethra and if you want can view your bladder from inside out.Back to normal activities afterwards

I get mine next Tuesday. Can't wait.

Had a foley inserted last Saturday night for a few hours and that was something I would rather not experience again nor the following 24 hours.

I have bladder cancer with recurrences—which is to be expected. I’ve had more cystoscopies than I can count. Every 3-6 months. If the nurse doing the prep uses enough lidocaine and puts it in slowly, it’s much better. The doctor will tell you the results right away as you will be awake.
My bladder cancer was discovered incidentally during a ureteroscopy procedure for kidney stones; I’m really grateful for that as it as found early.

My urologist did it as an in-office procedure and used the numbing jelly. It was way more awkward than painful, but for the scope of my procedure I'm glad it wasn't an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia. YMMV.

I think after really depends on how easily it went in and whether or not they took tissue samples. They took some tissue samples from me and it was manageable without pain meds.

Procedure itself is not so bad. I’ve had two, one with numbing gel and one under general. As tatortodd said, more awkward than painful when you are awake. The problem comes later…

The first time I had one done, awake and gelled (1984 at Balboa Naval Hospital - you never forget your first ) the doc told me

”You may experience discomfort when urinating for a short period after the procedure”


That is code speak for ”Your junk is gonna burn so bad when you pee, literal fire would actually bring relief”


Managed to make it almost 40 years before having another one done this past April when I had a kidney stone. The next three days were just as bad as I remembered, actually worse since I pee more frequently at 60 years old than I did back when I was 21.

Did it a couple months ago. They put me under so they could play Asteroids with a kidney stone. Pissed blood for about three days after and it burned something fierce. Had to sit down because it sprayed every which way. I foolishly didn't re-up the pain meds soon enough after getting home and thought I was going to die until the vikes kicked in.

Have had bladder cancer, multiple recurrences and more scopes than I can count. It’s akward and uncomfortable, but not nearly as bad as it sounds. I wouldn’t pass up a Xanax if offered ahead of time if you’re really nervous, I found the prep by a female nurse to be as uncomfortable as the procedure. A skilled urologist will be done before you know it. The position for the procedure can be uncomfortable.

Once the scope is in, check out the monitor: you get a real “Fantastic Voyage” vibe. It’s amazing how the doc can keep oriented.

Any discomfort I had afterwards passed in hours. I’d schedule mine in the morning and go straight to work,

About the only part of my coma I think was worthwhile was not being awake when they inserted the Foley.

I’ve done it to others and it never looked like fun.

Sadly I was awake when it was removed after about 30 days. It felt like everything to my kidneys were being pulled out.

I had a urologist perform mine, other than the awkwardness it wasn't too bad.

To the OP:
1. Please do not confuse your procedure with ureteroscoy done for kidney stones (as above).
2. Please do not confuse your procedure with placement of a foley catheter, usually done by a nurse, with a larger catheter and less skill.

Your procedure will be done by a urologist. This is the primary procedure they do, and every urologist has done thousands.

I used to take pain medication prior to the cysto, but it doesn't really help for the strange feeling you have when the scope is in the bladder.

I have had three of these done. It is uncomfortable, and quite thankfully, thinking about the procedure is worse than the actual procedure...You'll be OK.

Are we referring to a Cystoscopy?

The Cystoscopy was quick and nothing compared to the foley.

I have several small lesions and am waiting to hear back on when I am scheduled for a TURBT.

The urologist does not think they are invasive.

I had one several years back when one of the clamps my urologist used on the woody nerves migrated to my bladder. Wasn’t too bad. Asked the nurse beforehand if I should go pop a Cialis and come back in a few. She laughed and said she didn’t think that would help.

In all seriousness, glad you're home and that the procedure was quick and not that bad.

No pain, but, as the Doc said, it felt "weird."

Plus the feelings of inadequacy as the poor little thing kept trying to get smaller and smaller.

Thankfully no one laughed (at least in my presence).
