Wow, that sounds like they were passengers, not pilots. They were so far behind the airplane that they weren’t even in the same zip code. Ouch!

Captain had very little time in the 767. Got his type rating this year. Only had the plane for 3 months. He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster.

So am I understanding that they touched down, decided they were too fast, initiated a go-around, then thought better of it and tried to stop again? ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

The culture of the airline needs to be examined. They may foster bad habits with dangerous attitudes. The captain's lack of total time and time in type are possible factors in this accident, along with the FO's low total time. Low time can be offset with a strong safety culture. When I was new to an aircraft, I was more cautious than usual. I transitioned into the left seat of several types that I had no right seat time in. Yes, there were errors, like keeping too much speed in a descent and it was obvious well before 5 mile final that we had way too much energy to complete a landing. The FO and I laughed about me calling the go around from so far out. Our airline fostered a no-harm no-foul attitude about making the conservative call. I bet this company has a strong cowboy freight dog culture. They'll need to purge management.

Yes. They were way behind, took forever to figure landing wouldn’t work, then tried to go around when it was way too late and they had too little energy. They were a little more quick to figure out that wasn’t going to work.

Situational awareness, energy management, and a culture of making the safe call and laughing about it instead of being worried about getting in trouble for “wasting fuel”. I’m going to guess that airline had a pretty good safety record.

Yep. That's the kind of indecisiveness that I'm trying to train out of my 16 year-old daughter who just got her license. We also address it all the time in trainees at work, because in our job that'll get you killed. Multiple that by several hundred for someone in command of a commercial airliner. I'm not a pilot, but it certainly looks like mistakes were made. ----------------------------------------------------------- Any comments made by this poster are my own and do not reflect the views or opinions of my employer.

I would blame this incident on indecisiveness. Decisions where being made every step of the way. This more like United Captain Whipple who in 1962, was cleared to land his DC-8 full of passengers in Portland, OR. He broke through the clouds, saw a runway, and decisively landed his plane in Troutdale, OR on a 4,500' runway 12 miles from the correct airport. Fortunately, Captain Whipple got everything else right and only needed 3/4s of the runway to get the plane stopped.

I heard about that one when I lived in Portland and was learning to fly myself. They had to strip everything they could out of it, offload most of the fuel leaving just enough to get from Troutdale to PDX, and then bring a test pilot to fly it out. But, nobody got hurt.

I’m fairly sure he was my parents’ neighbor in Naples, FL in the 1990s. The article said his name was Styles R. Whipple, but the neighbor’s name was Stiles R. Whipple. The neighbor was a retired senior United pilot.

Looked like a low-time pilot getting behind the plane and trying to drive the plane onto the runway. _______________________ “The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. One night about 1975 I was fishing on Percy Priest Lake just off the end of the Smyrna airport runway. The Smyrna airport was an old SAC airfield that once had B52's. The airport is 10 to 12 miles from the Nashville airport. I heard a large airplane and saw a commercial plane with lights on coming in for a landing. At the last moment it powered up & turned back north to the Nashville airport __________________________________________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit! A very similar incident happened in my neck of the woods in the late 1990s. University basketball team was being flown back from an out of town game on a charter 727. Pilot mistook the small city airport in a neighboring town for the larger airport in the main town he was trying reach ~10 miles away. Managed to land the plane safely on the much shorter runway, but they had to bus the players home, then later strip the aircraft to get it back out again, and the airline had to pay for repairs to the runway.
