Sonos Ones sound good, but when I tried one it was not really compatible with the Apple environment.
Instead I settled on Audio Engine powered speakers Audio Engine website..

I'd consider Audio Engine as well.
I only have a passive pair but the sound is very good on the neutral side.
Check out Drop.com for the occasional group-buy/deal on Audio Engine.
I got my HDP6's there at a really good price.

I don't have any experience with Sonos Move, but I have two pairs of Sonos Ones.

One pair I bought for use as my rear surround speakers for my Sonos Arc home theater system.

The other pair was a gift, and I use them as standalone stereo speakers in the master bathroom for streaming audio while showering and getting ready.

Quality-wise, they're fantastic. Functionality-wise, they work great as part of the overall Sonos home theater system, but as standalone speakers like I have in my bathroom and like you're envisioning, they're a bit limited.

Understand that Sonos Ones are not Bluetooth speakers. Any content has to be streamed to Sonos One standalone speakers solely through the Sonos app on your cell phone over Wifi. This limit you to playing music that you have saved in your phone storage, or music that's part of a streaming service that cooperates with Sonos within the Sonos app.

You can't just Bluetooth your phone to the Sonos One speakers and play anything you want, like you could with a true Bluetooth speaker. So you can't do things like have audio from a Youtube video playing on your phone come through the Sonos One speakers.

The Sonos in-app compatible audio streaming services are limited to the list here: https://support.sonos.com/s/ar.../3459?language=en_US

While it's fairly comprehensive, and includes most of the big name audio streaming services, it's not all-inclusive.

And you can't use Sonos Ones with a non-Sonos home theater system, since you can't just plug them in to an audio out port on your TV or audio receiver, or hook them together through Bluetooth. So you wouldn't be able to use them with your TV without investing in a full Sonos home theater system designed to incorporate Ones as surround speakers, like the Sonos Arc system I have.

So unless all of the audio services you use are available through the Sonos app, and you definitely plan to invest in a full Sonos home theater system for your TV in the future, you probably want to look at another more flexible option besides the Sonos Ones.

But if you happen to check the above boxes, you'll be very happy with the quality of the Ones.

I have Sonos Ones, Sub and Playbase for 3-4 years now and am happy with the setup as TV surround sound as well as use as a home stereo for streaming music wirelessly ... internet radio and local music library. I don't play music very loud but play music most all day as background music and maybe watch TV in the evening. If I had it to do all over again, I'd go with Sonos again. It has worked out nicely ... for me.

Not sure why anyone would have trouble with Apple and Sonos. In fact, Sonos is targeted for Apple and Windows app interface. Sonos does not play well with Android and Linux but is doable with Linux on my desktop.

Furthermore, Sonos has a wonderful feature called "Trueplay" in which an Apple device ... and ONLY an Apple device (trueplay doesn't work with ANY other OS) is used to acoustically balance the Sonos speakers to a rooms environment. I bought an iPad JUST to use with Sonos and take advantage of the Trueplay feature as needed, usually only once unless the speakers or environment change. The Sonos speakers sound nice without even using Trueplay though. I also just use my voice and Amazon Alexa Sonos app to control some features of Sonos.

EDIT: I think if you are needing speakers just for one particular spot and just for music, bookshelf speakers may be the way to go. But if you are looking to tie the whole house together musically or tie music and TV capabilities together, Sonos is a great option but certainly not the only option. Sonos just ties it all together nicely for me.

Parts-Express has very reasonable prices for their line of speakers. Most brands manufacture in China, might as well get a good price. They may or may not fit your criteria but worth a mention.

IKEA has a line of speakers that are rebranded SONOS. If that you haven't checked them out.

SONOS fan here too. Play5 pair in my LR and a Play:1 pair elsewhere, along with some random Play:1 singles.

If I have to, I’ll buy the One-SL for any new installs, as the Play:1 is retired and the SL is mic-less.

EDIT - I forgot to mention that IKEA has a cheap SONOS speaker that’s pretty affordable but also the same guts as the Play:1

We’ve had Sonos for 3 years or more, a pair of 1s and a sound bar for our primary tv. Sound quality is great, but I have one issue. A year or so ago, Sonos made their speaker system incompatible with my iTunes music purchases. Used to be able to play it through Sonos, now I can’t. Great for streaming services, but the loss of that capability was kinda big for me.
