I retired at the end of 2010 (2nd time). I was 62 at the time and couldn't be happier except for one thing. My social life now seems to revolve around Dr's appointments, but it is keeping me breathing so I'm still happy.

Retired 25 years ago at age 55. Never looked back, and do not miss a millisecond of the political horse shit that had taken control of the company. What decided me? When the board of directors decided to give John Akers a multi-million dollar bonus for his performance. First bonus for any CEO of the company, and they gave the asshole the bonus for losing more than a billion dollars that year.

I have that recurring dream with exams that I haven't studied for and classes that I'm late for but can't find.

Then I remember that I finished school like 10 years ago.

I was forced into retirement last year, it was a difficult transition. Yet today I spend so much time with my little boy I regret not seeking different employment before the medical retirement as a cop.

I sunk two sewer clean outs to the grade of the sod at my new house this morning, ran the boys shoes to school when he found out there was a requirement for no flops today.

I love it.

Next month will make it four years of complete retirement for me. Not once have I thought about working again, if I wanted to work again, I would have never retired in the first place.

Retirement is the second best thing to have happened to me. The best thing that happened to me was falling in love again 27 years ago, and marrying that woman almost 26 years ago.

Yes I too have the occasional dream that I’m back working again, but then I wake up and realize it was only a nightmare. Wink

I took early retirement at age 61 in 2005, flunked it. Economy fell apart, thought I should go back to work, managed to get full-time job with benefits in Hawaii; did that for 5 years, got a very generous lump-sum retirement benefit at age 70.5. That was 2015.
I still am on call pretty much every night. Last night I did a cardiac cath with my old residency attending, and hadn’t finished the report when I had to scramble to do another cath.
Other nights I can’t find the residents for rounds.
But—-I never realized how stressful being a cardiologist was until I retired. Now I work a little bit, volunteer at Balboa Naval a little, “keep my hand in” I think mostly for my own self-esteem. That way I can say I AM a cardiologist, not I USED TO BE a cardiologist. Big Grin

You guys aren't helping. I'm 58.5 and getting rather frustrated with the stupidity of my corporate overlord. If I didn't have to plan for my wife to live to 125 I'd be confident leaving tomorrow. Her mom turns 100 in a couple of weeks, still lives and home and renewed her DL last week. Thus my wife is convinced she is going to live forever.

Then take out a 20 year term life policy and if you live an average lifespan she will collect it.

I retired 11 years ago. I do some driving for my former employer and a few dealers. I like driving and seeing new territory. New towns, new gunshops and new bar-b-que joints. Life is good.

I have retired six times so far. I retired from the Army with twenty-two years of service in 1985. I took an early retirement, severance package, and early signing bonus as a staff engineer from a corporation during a merger in 1999. I took a severance package as a department manager from another corporation during a downsizing in 2001. I retired as a Realtor in 2004. I retired from selling a luxury brand of vehicles in 2006. I retired as a consultant for a law enforcement agency in 2010.
