Johnny 3eaglesI am declining to comment on any medical reports until I have had a chance to relax and get some sleep. I had just left my orthopedic follow up & X Ray from my hip replacement.
Damn lift truck backed right in to me in the middle of the street..200 yards from my destination.

I was going to make some smartass comment about not looking like a wreck where someone ran into you, but I'd have been way wrong, as usual.

BigSwedeWow. How fast was he backing up?
Don't forget to claim diminished value
August 26, 2025, 05:51 PM
Johnny 3eaglesHe back up so quick I couldn't get moving quick enough, even though I wasn't right on his ass. Reverse, Horn, Boom. Fortunately I had witnesses. The company owner showed up and was pretty awesome. I also expressed my appreciation for his drivers conduct after the accident.
His insurance company already accepted Liability as I texted them pictures of my car and "stuff". Police report number, etc.
Diminished Value? I'm kinda thinking total...1 headlight assembly is $2900 (x 2). Front end is shifted over to the side. Hood, 2 fenders, bumper assemble, grill, suspension, etc. Can't open pax door, drivers door is hard to open.

Johnny 3eaglesI have no payments on anything, house, car, etc. Any credit cards are ZERO balance. I really don't want to make a car payment again, but may not have a choice because I will not buy a used car. We'll see. Gotta wait for Volvo collision center and insurance adjuster to do their thing. I'm thinking of downgrading to, Shoot, I don't know...Mazda, Hyundai, Ford. I know what! I need an $75000 Ford F150 King Ranch. Excellent grocery getter

Thankfully this happened 100 yards from my daughters house.

AglifterI understand not wanting debt, but that sounds like a safety issue, if the insurance company doesn’t total it.
August 26, 2025, 09:35 PM
StlheadEven if the car is totaled, the check will be for its current value. Likely less than half the cost of a similar new rig. Whenever your auto gets wrecked it is a looser.

shovelheadAir bags go off? That’s about a sure ticket to total loss city anymore.

Johnny 3eaglesAir bags did not deploy. Impact was on the hood first, plus I was in reverse at the time trying to get out of the way. The Lift Gate hit first.

RogueJSKHopefully they get you taken care of properly, and you can get into something equivalent.
Not sure I agree with your stance of total refusal to consider a used car, though... After all, the car you've been driving for the past 4 year was used.

You can often get a 1ish year old very lightly used car for noticeably less than a new one, with it still having nearly all of its original warranty left. For example, some folks will lease/buy a new car for a year, put 5k-10k on it, and turn it in for a new/different car, at which point they're put up for sale as (barely) used cars.
Those type of lightly used cars are what I generally shoot for. Let someone else take the big initial depreciation hit on the brand new car, and then I can get into a practically new car for a lot less than a brand new one would be.

Not surprising. Car repair costs have skyrocketed. And that's way more than just minor damage.
It doesn't take much to total a car these days, even a nice lightly used one.
For example, my girlfriend's car was quite nearly totaled a year ago, after a low speed 10ish mph T-bone collision into her driver's side, after which the car was totally driveable with what looked like just basic cosmetic damage. But final repair cost came to about $2k shy of the limit for totaling it, which was around $16,000. (Which is calculated as something like 65% of the car's actual value.)
So it was about $14k in repair work for a seemingly minor fender bender. Initial estimate was ~$6k, which seemed about right for the body damage, but they just kept revising the initial estimate as they disassembled it and discovered further damage underneath. Was revised something like 3 times, and ended up over double the initial estimate, and near-totaled.

Johnny 3eaglesRepair facility was over 85% when the insurance company claimed total loss. I have already replaced it with a 2025 Mazda cx-50 Premium Plus.

oldbill123The difference is his "used car" was not abused and had a know service history. Can't find that anymore
