Balzé Halzé7.2 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan, tsunami warnings issued in Japan
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan early Wednesday morning, officials said.
The quake caused several parts of capital city Taipei to lose power.
Japan issued an evacuation advisory for coastal areas near Okinawa after the earthquake triggered a tsunami warning.
The US National Tsunami Warning Center said it is “analyzing the event to determine the level of danger” for Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California and British Columbia.

corsairAnything over 6 is an attention get'r and if you're in a third-world/impoverished part, it can be devastating.
A quake over 7, then it gets into the no-shit territory and some of those pics show it with structure collapses.

Rey HRHThere's nothing like an earthquake to put mankind in its place on this earth. That second video is terrifying with whole buildings just a- kilter.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I'm having trouble judging that building. Like, it should have been made more loose so it could flex and absorb. But then at the same time, DAMN that's a strong ass building, way to go engineers!

AnushThe 7.2 was followed by a 6.4 on the opposite side of the city. Multiple aftershocks recorded.

SIG4EVAMy family in Taiwan is safe. This was the biggest earthquake in 25 years and I experienced some significant ones when I lived there. The east coast got pounded, and unfortunately its more remote and they haven't been hit like that. There were a lot of shoddy built high rises in the 80's that are falling now.

ShaqlI'm always amazed when I see a building putting the leaning tower of Pisa to shame and not collapse.
Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed.
Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

SIG4EVAHere's a really cool article on the design and function of Taipei 101. It uses a massive internal damper to control sway and was modeled after bamboo.

LunaseeI have been in the Taipei 101 ~10 years ago. The top floor emergency exits had outside rope ladders for egress. Obviously, they didn't go all the way to the ground. Not sure what good they will do.

corsairI'm not sure if I should be rockin' out to the Etta James mix the driver has on or, cringing at what could be coming down the hillside.

sjtillMy daughter was in Taipei years ago. Showed us pix of Taipei 101–I was really impressed with the engineering. Amazing what bright hard-working people can do in a free enterprise economy.

What move should he have made? Easy to watch what already happened and offer a move. There was no way to predict anything at that time. Move. Stay. Pick one and pray.

RightwireMy move would have been to get as close to the retaining wall as I could. A likely safe spot from debris coming down the hill.

old rugged crossHopefully they were not injured as it looked like they might have been dealt a blow just to the right rear and not a direct cabin hit which would of killed all inside.
