Hey all-

I'm looking to upgrade the exterior door security, on my house.
The house has a metal security gate outside the front door but it is a budget item and flimsy.

Any suggestions on brands to look for and features to choose?

Lowe's has some with 2" steel tubing and shields welded over the portion where the dead bolt meets the frame. That would be a significant upgrade.

This would be surface mount, over the front door.

Thanks.

Bruce

Edited for clarity.

This company has some impressive looking products. However almost any steel door will be better than a wood door.

Get rid of the add on security gate. Replace the main entry door with something like this:

I have no clue about security doors, but make sure that you upgrade the hinges.

People reinforce the bejezus out of the handle side with nifty deadbolts and chains and whatnot, but then ignore the half inch screws holding the hinges.

We get into dope dealers “reinforced” doors in about 2 seconds attacking hinge side.

Nice doors. No idea of the price but they look spendy and they only service them if you live within 100 miles or so of Philly.
Something like that would do nicely, though.

That's only one manufacturer, that I could dig up quickly for an example.. I think there are others.

I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't order something similar (steel semi-decorative front door with a built in multipoint locking system) from some of the big manufacturers (ie, Pella, Anderson, exec), but it would probably be a custom piece.

I'm finding some steel doors with steel door frames that look like they would do the job better than a separate gate and typical door combo. Butt ugly but the research continues.
I imagine I can find a steel door and frame in something decorative. We'll see how pricey it is.

I am an advocate of the Katy Bar system for door security. Easy to install and easy to use. One will withstand 2000 pounds, put two on the door and nothing is getting in

I have worked for a family owned company that used to buy our security doors from a place in Tennessee. Our older customers could not work the lock close to the jam without scraping their knuckles bloody. My company developed a lock that is center in the door, and throws two 5/8 stainless steel bolts. One on each side of the door. Even if you take the hinges off you can't get the door open.

https://aztecmfginc.com/doors-1/

Frame is 16 gauge 1x2 inch tubing. The center lock box is 1x3 14 gauge. Its all custom work so we are very pricey. We don't ship or anything like that. Perhaps you can find a similar home improvement/ornamental iron shop in your neck of the woods that can serve your needs.

Nice looking product. And as a bonus, I now know the origin of "Katy bar the door!".

There is so much glass across my front and back of house, and doors, I've given up. Some interesting options here, none I can afford.

Have to stick with security system for when I'm not there, same and some plan for when I am.....
