Years ago I was driving in the Northern U.P., late October. The driver in front of me hit & killed a coyote. My relative is an avid trapper, so I stopped. The guy that hit it didn’t want it, just stopped to check things out.

I said I’d take it, give to the trapper. Meanwhile, a guy driving the county truck stopped, said he would take it if nobody wanted it. My wife at the time got a kick out of the interest in road kill, in a matter of minutes.

Over the years I got a few grouse in similar ways, and a deer.

I don't think I've ever found a tick on me in the UP. I'm not saying they're not there, but they're nowhere near as abundant as some places I've been in Kansas and Nebraska, or even back home in Indiana. They do have enough black flies and mosquitos to make up for it, though...they exist in swarms up there, and they'll suck you dry.

There is a dedicated ‘tick season’ in the U.P, early June, for a few weeks.

Of course, can get a tick anytime temps are near 40 or above. If I get to pick my tick, I’ll take the common ‘wood tick’, a little larger, easier to discover.

Not trying to be picky but a pasty is a meat pie, sort of like a calzone and they're quite awesome. Pasties used to be part of a strippers' wardrobe...I have no idea if they're flavored or not.

The UP is paradise - for about 6 weeks a year. Then there's 7 feet of snow followed by man-eating mosquitoes and then hoards of tourists. We take advantage of the 6 weeks every year and look forward to going back.
