If you want to buy a powertool at my local Depot you'll need an associate to get it out of lockup for you, nothing is out that you can pick up and take to the register.

One HD sales person told me that if HD put into place human based theft protection, it would pay for itself many times over. I'm assuming they meant to stop the thief from exiting the store, but maybe if the store just hired a bona fide uniformed LEO, surveilled each checkout, and notified the LEO contractor of a theft in progress, I don't see how that wouldn't work if the math worked out well enough.

Depends on the location but miscreants can generally walk right out with it. Either local stage doesn’t care and won’t even arrest even if caught or company policy prohibits employees detaining or chasing.

Man, I thought that kind of attitude was confined to California.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised though. I bought a Nintendo switch game for my kid a while back and the woman popped it loose from the display case and had to walk out to the register. Wouldn’t let me take it.
But at least they were deterring

Same here now for the most part but with Black Friday and Christmas stick they had some stuff out in the aisles and they had them all chained together.

Pretty much where it started but when places are nationwide and corporate guess what everyone gets, the same blanket policy.

When folks do get caught judge just lets them out and they go back to do it again.

All the really nice power stuff in my local home depot is behind locked gates. Have not noticed non functional display tools yet. However Milwaukee or Ryobi etc may even make a non functional item for their biggest retailers home dept/lowes etc.

I know my local Walmart has a sheriff car out there about every other time I go in and the deputy is having a chat with the manager and a person or 2 looking at a not happy evening in the clink. They don’t fool around here. My big fear is I will accidentally screw up the self checkout and get accused of a theft. Reminds me, where is the self checkout employee Christmas party this year ?

I like Home Depot. All of them here do lock up the copper wire and power tools. It’s not big deal to me until the associate wants to be difficult by asking where he should take it or they drag their feet getting around to opening the crib. Any BS like that fowls my mood only then to find out at the registers that items are missing bar codes. It’s more and more tempting to go back to using commercial supply houses but I like being able to see the inventory and consider alternatives.

There are going to be a lot of attempted "returns" on "defective" equipment.

Seems like they should be drilling a hole right through the thieves heads, probably more effective and saves a few bucks not destroying one for display.

Screw all of this stupid ass jail time business all to hell.
Enough with it all ready.

Guilty of theft or battery should be loss of an organ

Yes , the state will pay for criminals organs to be transplanted into people that are waiting on donor lists.

Lungs, retna's , liver portions, kidneys, skin grafts, what ever.

Good people should benefit from the evil that others provide.

I’m hoping beyond hope that law enforcement nationally will revert to the “broken windows” philosophy of pouncing on small crime and catching big criminals. It would do so much for the mood of the country if crime didn’t pay (so much).
It’s very discouraging to every law-abiding citizen and parent.

That just seems dumb but theft seems to be an epidemic these days.

Was just at my local Walmart yesterday and I was frankly shocked at how much crap is locked up now. Not just high end/high dollar items either. 2/3 of the store seems to be locked up now, it’s ridiculous and makes me not want to buy anything there now.

It’s the judicial branch that is the problem. The enforcement side of law enforcement has no problems snatching up the thieves were pretty good at it.
The problem is the judges just let them right out of the jail before we even finish our paper work and they are out doing it again the same day.

It’s a problem of their making since they decided at the corporate level that theft was acceptable.

This is what it got them?

The solution is simple. Prosecute and incarcerate thieves and the problem will soon resolve itself.

It’s disgusting that theft is considered normal.

This is not a scalable solution, at least not financially.

What if all demo models across all types of stores followed this? What if Costco and Best Buy drilled holes into all the shelf models - receivers, blu-ray players, apple tvs, speakers, etc etc.

The democrat party model is a huge fail. You don't cure society's ills by making crime acceptable. Dumb fucks.

The judicial process and civil litigation is what created the corporations current state.
20 years ago when I started in LE Lowe’s, Home Depot, Macy’s, Walgreens, Walmart. You name it the big box stores had loss prevention that was extremely proactive and hands on (literately snatch and tackling shoplifters as they exited with goods).

Then came lawsuits to which moron liberal judges would give judgments to the criminal that got hurt by LP even though the criminal was committing a criminal act and then criminals were let go and no means of paying restitution just do donut again and again and again.

So corporate did what still makes them money, cut the LP department let people walk out and strap the costs to the back of the paying consumer.

I am not a fan of Sharia law, or the idea of a religious theocracy. However, I suspect that a system where convicted thieves have their right hand cut off has less problems than the system we currently have being run the way it is being run.

I’m just glad Home Depot sales Milwaukee tools so I don’t have to order online.

Lowe’s with their craftsman and in-house lonely brand nonsense irritates me. I always go to HD over Lowes.
