Las Cruces Police Officer Stabbed To Death
First, I have debated about posting this video when I first saw it when it came out a few days ago. In light of the numerous videos where cops have been attacked by suspects with knives and the officers successfully shooting suspects, I wanted to post this to show how it can go very wrong. I got a bit of PTSD flare up from watching it, having been on a few Officer Down calls.

This video shows the chaos of an "Officer Down Scene" and the time and effort it takes for other officers/investigators to figure out what happened. It is a longer video but well worth the watch. The suspect was shot and killed by a bystander and original witness. There is other information about the armed civilian in the video.

Stay alert, carry and train, and be prepared.

It did sound like he had been shot, but it was so mixed up on the facts it was hard to tell. It did state that they decided not to charge the guy that killed the perp, so I wonder if he hit the cop by mistake since some of the police said he had a hole in his head.

That was hard to watch, hats off to you LE guys.

The wound on the back of the officer's head was a stab wound, it just appeared to be similar to a gunshot wound (deep penetrating wound). Yeah, that is how much force the the killer was using when he was stabbing the officer. Armed civilian hit the killer, not the officer.

It took a while to download Officer Hernandez's body worn camera due to it being covered and caked in blood.

If you watch it all you’ll see what happened in the video near the end. Definitely a (multiple) stab wound, not a friendly fire by the Good Samaritan.

Very sad situation of course and you can see how confusing it was, even with decent video and excellent witnesses. One of the witnesses actually shot the perp and should have been recognized for his actions.
He was not charged after the investigation was completed but hopefully recognized for his role, even if it couldn’t save the officer. Hopefully any recognition just didn’t make it into the story.

The video of the actual attack just shows how quickly things went down and how prepared anyone in law enforcement must always be or pay a price.

And the killer was a cousin of the Armed Civilian's girlfriend.

Fight or flight reaction.

Sadly, the BWC footage will be used for training current and future officers. Hopefully, it will enlighten those who are blind to the dangers officers encounter where SWAT teams wouldn’t stand a chance.

social Workers And Therapists are what I’m referring to above.

The Thin Blue Line just got a little bit thinner. Thoughts and prayers from Mrs tac and me to all concerned - relatives and friends of the fallen officer.

Bless all there.

That was a tough watch. I hope they’ll be able to learn something from this to help in the future.

[snip] During the conversation, Silva pulled out a knife and approached Hernandez.
Hernandez turned to avoid Silva, he tripped.

Silva then jumped on top of Hernandez and stabbed him several times.

About 15 seconds later a witness, who police identified as Issiah Astorga intervened.

Silva then advances towards Astorga.

Astorga fired four rounds at Silva and told him to drop his weapon.

Astorga then ran over to help Hernandez.

“Stay with us man. You're gonna be okay. I got you,” Astorga said. [snip]

If anyone needs a better demonstration of the distance that a criminal can travel with a knife before you can react, the video here shows that.
