A family member has a container of freon 22 by Dupont (for HVAC & fridges) that is mostly full, at least. It's a little smaller than a standard home propane tank, says 30#. She's been told that it's worth big bucks.

IDK if that's still true, or if its time has passed. I called one HVAC place but haven't heard back from them. I figured someone here would know the truth.

I can weigh it. I assume the 30# figure is the freon itself. If so, what weight should the container assume?

It's like this online photo

Absolutely. Problem is, it's an already opened can. Nobody (who would buy it) could easily verify it's virgin R 22 and not reclaimed etc. etc,

It may or may not be a money-making item. Used I would guess not so much. But no one who cares about the environment should do anything but get it into the reuse chain,

I sold off my last partial cylinder to a customer who had a vintage home with the original built in refrigerator. It had been converted to R22 about 10 years previous. They were selling th ehouse and i told him it would be good to have a supply as it was getting expensive. think it was about $300 for what I had in the jug.

My thanks to those who have responded. I don't know if it has been tapped or not. When it says 30lbs is that referring to the weight of the entire canister and its contents or just the freon? I could then get its actual weight and figure out how much is left, or if it is indeed full.

Oh yes, the environment. Funny how Dupont showed it hurt the earth after the patent expired. It was about 2.50 a pound them. The new crap, also by Dupont, is 65 or so and requires special equipment. I'm not a scientist, but I think I have this one figured out.

An empty jug is around 6 lbs.
So if your tank weighs 26 lbs, you have 20 lbs of refrigerant.

And for the guy paying $65 a pound for ' the new stuff'... R22, R410, etc... I have plenty to sell you!! Please contact me, so I can get you payment options for your incoming order!

BUT, you also need an a/c license in order to buy R22 from a dealer/distributor.

Just because something is legal to do doesn't mean it is the smart thing to do.

AC guy (know & trust) said at one point it was $800+ at one point for a jug of R22. I didn't ask current price.

By weight it's at least half full. IDK if there are any safety concerns in selling/shipping a partially used container?

Any members in or passing by Kentucky with a use for it could use the email in my profile.
