Check out this guy who comes to visit occasionally
He seems to be showing up at the house around dust every other day or so. Pretty cool character.

I love it! I love owls, and I haven’t seen nor heard any since moving to the Texas Hill Country last year. We had tons of burrowing owls, great horned owls and barn owls further west, but so far, nothing here.

And the scariest thing about them (Besides the screech owls call) is the way they silently fly. One startled me so bad that I almost shot at it. Was working mids on patrol and checking a business burglar alarm and as I walked around back I flushed a big owl up. The huge bird silently winging on by had me losing my crap for a second.

Yeah, that one or a relative hangs out in my neighborhood. That first sound was a juvenile. They adult hoot is quite distinctive and has a pattern. Worse is early morning in the tree next to my window.
But they are cool to look at and hear in the night. Try to find the owl pellet for dissection.

Twice in the last couple of years, I've come literally face-to-face (at a distance of less than 6 feet) with a Great Horned Owl.
Both times, unfortunately, in my chicken coop. First time, the owl was so gorged on chicken that he could barely move. I shooed him out of the coop with a broom and he just sat in the yard and looked at me for several minutes before flying off.
The second one (I assume it was a different one) was more active and flew by me as he un-assed the area. It IS amazing how silent they are.
I've since boarded up the windows on the coop, screened the vents and developed the habit of checking the coop before I shut them up at night to make sure Woodsy hasn't gotten in during the day.
Be careful when following the masses. Sometimes the M is silent.

I hear them all the time at our lake place and they are nearby. Have yet to spot one. Perching on a flag pole is damn cool!

Awesome. I was in a tree stand one morning- obviously noise discipline was in full effect- and caught movement to my left just as a Great Horned owl glided by at a distance not more than 15’ or so. If I hadn’t seen it in my peripheral vision, I’d have never detected it. Silent as a ghost. And huge.

If this is his call, it's a barred owl. We have one that is the harbinger of fall. Showed up in our neighborhood a week ago.

I lived on land that was once part of a massive old farm in orange, Va. the land grant that established the farm pre-dated the United States
Adjacent to my lot was an old abandoned barn that had a great horned owl living in it
When it would fly out of the hayloft it had to tuck Its wings in it was so big
Always knew when he was out when I would sit on my back porch
Even if I didn’t see him the mini daschund and the fox terrier would let me know it was time to go inside

Had a fine crop of baby Cottontails one year. They kept mysteriously disappearing. Great Horned Owl got every one of them. Silent death from above!

This Coopers hawk hangs around my property. I catch squirrels in the Havahart trap and place them on top of a 4x4 post at the garden.
