I find them to be incredibly slippery so I avoid them simply based on that.

touring Mammoth Caves as a kid, there's a grate over what I remember to be a smallish pool of water. the tour guide said something to the effect of "and if you look down, you'll see a pool of water. while people have tried to discover how deep it is, no one knows for certain."

yeah. 9 year old me decided I was not going to die by falling into an endless pool of water.

I avoid grates.
