if you do decide on the pilot, I'd compare to the Subaru Ascent

Re: first year models, you should also consider parts availability, depreciation, and unwillingness to deal.

If the car ends up with a warranty issue, you may have to wait weeks or months for a replacement part.

A dealer may not deal on a new model on the first year due to limited supply.

And when you turn around to go sell it, you may yourself be trying to sell it to people who tend to avoid first model years--you also take the gamble that the vehicle becomes a poor seller, never gains popularity, and it's resale value drops off.

I haven't seen parts availability issues. But first years model will hold it's value the longest because it will stay current body style the longest. Yes, dealers won't deal but it will also hold value better in a few years, versus being last years model.

I wouldn't worry about buying the new body style. I just bought a new body style expedition, since June 1st it's been flawless. Nowadays there aren't many issues generally with first model years. Plus it's not very different than the pilot and shares a lot of common parts.

OP: I'd just go with the size vehicle that suits you best. Either will be good vehicles.

Early reviews of the Passport (Car and Driver or Motortrend, I think) indicate that Honda still has some supension tuning work to do on it. At this stage the Pilot is the better bet.

If it also wasn't in its first model year, I'd also consider the Kia Telluride.

And read about the oil dilution with fuel.

The CRV was on my list last year until I began following this problem. Honda has pretty much remained mute on the problem. I don’t believe gas is a very good lubricant but may get you past the warranty period.

I'd get the Pilot if the money is about the same.

Here's Doug DeMuro's review of the Passport:

I can't embed from my phone. I think he liked it, but had trouble seeing the value over the Pilot.
