There's lots of pros&cons info available:

1. Range limited to 100 feet by direct bluetooth specifitaction, but honest folks might help if you activate "Mark As Lost" (IF the tagged vagabond is within a good cellar service area.)
2. Its potentially bad if they eat one.

GPS trackers are much more reasonable in price and capability than they were a decade or two ago.

I no longer have a pooch but use airtags on my vehicles. I wish there was a way to silence them to keep thieves from finding them.

A neighbor was watching a family pet long term while their family member was deployed. Stella was a roamer and we live in a rural adjacent community. Houses somewhat close but some larger open spaces and wooded areas.

The air tag would ping sporadically while Stella was in range of someone with an Apple device. They eventually switched to a GPS collar for her.

If you are in an area with a denser population the air tag should be sufficient.

If you check Youtube, there are instructions on how to remove the speaker from the airtag. Pretty easy. On my way too expensive recumbent trike I installed two airtags. The easy to locate one has the speaker to make it findable, the other one with the speaker removed is much better hidden. It will only buy me a little time before it too is found but maybe enough to locate the thief before he realizes there is another tag. This will only work if I know quickly when the trike is nabbed or if the miscreant only has an android phone.

Depends where you live. If your in a community with houses and people around that have iPhones your good. If your out in the country with lots of land not so much.

Lots of youtube videos on removing the speaker. Not to hard. I have one in my vehicle and I removed the speaker for this very reason.

Yup. I have an airtag on my Husky's collar. It has helped me track him down on two occasions. Once when he found a weak spot in a fence, and another when a neighbor apparently didn't latch the gate properly. Both times he was easily trackable. Catching him was another thing. I originally put the airtag in a free-hanging fob hanging from his collar, but he plays rough with his friends and soon I switched to a collar-mount where it is nestled in a pod. Much better.

Airtags work as long as the tag itself is within about 800 feet of any iDevice or wifi network with an iDevice on it.

I also have airtags in my car, camera bag, and EDC backpack.

Have one on both of my dogs. Use the holder that keeps it tight against the collar and it's on the inside so it doesnt get knocked off. They rough house alot ( 2 big dogs) and they haven't knocked them off yet. They do beep every once in a while but it hasn't been a problem.

Airtags are not themselves GPS devices. Instead they locate using proximity to known location or GPS-enabled WiFi, wired, and cellular devices as well as cellular towers. Yes, Apple already knows where your WiFi network is located even if you are using a VPN.

I believe Android phones can be brought into the location-determination constellation if they have certain Apple software installed on them (e.g. iCloud, or anything requiring an Apple ID signin).

How to remove AirTag speaker

I tried airtags on the dog collar.
Didn't work for shit.
Was never able to locate the dog when it got out of the fenced area.
Then the holder I got for the airtag fell apart during normal dog roughhousing.

Complete waste of money.
