I first got into the milsurp game in the early to mid 2000s, right at the tail end of the "good old days" but decades past the "really good old days". Luckily, prices were still pretty reasonable through about the early 2010s, which allowed me to obtain a small collection at fair prices before overseas supplies finally dried up and the market went off the rails.
Cheap, or reasonable, depending on your point of view, ammo.
And I'll agree with RogueJSK that the end of the golden age of the cheap military rifle sucks too.
