My cat, who is just under 2 years old, loves it on grocery day because of all the bags that are brought in the house. He licks them and I have no idea why he likes doing this. Has anyone ever seen this or know what the appeal is?

That wasn't the bag the salmon was in was it?

No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

Ha ha! Good idea, but no fish or food items were in the bags to give him any food scent.

Mine does the same thing. Didn't think to ask here for an explanation, but probably should have!

One of our cats really likes the bags. Occasionally might lick them, but mostly just plays in and around them.

There is probably some chemical smell associated with manufacture or storage that humans can't detect.

Cats are weird. Probably likes the way it feels.

My one cat licks the side of (skinny side) doors. It’s really weird.

I don't know but I've seen a lot of cats obsessed with plastic wrapping and bags. Some lick, some chew.

As my old kung fu sifu used to say, "Many cat lick; fu manchu".

I can't believe I just said that.

It's possible that cats detect a smell that mimics pheromones. Licking the plastic could cause a flehmen response, and could also be why a cat will urinate on a plastic bag. It's possible some cats lick plastic because they like the feel of it on their tongue.

I saw no evidence of it in the video, but if he chews on the plastic, he might ingest it, which could be dangerous. As for why, I haven't a clue.

I've rarely been catless since I was 4.

It's pretty close to universal that they like the package to any new thing brought in the house regardless of being plastic, cardboard, or paper. Everything brought into the house is analyzed whether or not it can be a toy or source of amusement.

The sweetest little weirdo of all time, Echo (BTW, she was gray), liked to lick chip bags, grocery bags, garbage bags (couldn't let any part of the plastic liner hang out top of bathroom garbage can w/ lid) etc.

My wife and I have owned cats for a lot of years. Currently we have 9 inside cats. And every Friday when I come home from the grocery store, our one cat licks the heck out of the plastic bags.

I think my wife said it’s some type of oil or something used in the manufacturing process that attracts the cats. None of the other cats do this.

The cat is trying every sense at its disposal to identify your weakness. Once that weakness is identified, the cat will attempt to kill you in your sleep.

This. I think we could do a 300 page thread.

My cat likes to lick plastic bags, too. That's just one of it's many peculiarities.

Black stands on the edge of the litter box perched like a bird to take a shit. He also drinks water by scooping it with his paws and licking it from his paws. He also thinks he's a dog, acts like a dog in many ways, loves having his rope bone tossed for him.

Good luck.
My cat likes to chew on plastic bags. Ended up costing me ~ $1800 in vet bills after she got a blockage in her intestinal tract once.

No more bags lying around since. It's a chore because seemingly everything comes in plastic these days.

Most orange tabbies are like this, but I'll assume from his name Black he's not an orange tabby?
