https://www.themeateater.com/h...-shot-set-in-wyoming A team of long-range shooting experts in Wyoming set what appears to be the new world record for the longest rifle shot ever completed: 7,774 yards or 4.4 miles. Scott Austin and Shepard Humphries led the team from Nomad Rifleman, a shooting range and instruction center based in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The custom bolt-action rifle was chambered in .416 Barrett, and the hand-lathed 422-grain bullet took 24.5 seconds to reach the target.

1/69 shots and get a hit. Your an “expert” in my book when you can land a group, not a one time Hail Mary shot. ---------- “Nobody can ever take your integrity away from you. Only you can give up your integrity.” H. Norman Schwarzkopf

I'm always curious what the Criteria is for calling these things a world record. I can make that shot one-handed, eyes closed, and standing...given enough opportunities. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

That doesn’t answer the question. I watched the video and agree with the man speaking to some degree, but let me propose this. If something like this is considered a record, let’s change that because mathematically speaking ANYONE can do this given enough tries and time. So instead, let’s say, the record for a 4.4 Mile shot is 69 tries, 68 tries will be the new world record, not 4.5 miles in 72 tries. Once it happens on the first attempt twice, who was faster from step “A” to impact. This, again, is JUST my opinion 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

Anyone can shoot a rifle 7,774 yards. Did they hit their target, and what was the target? Having read the article, I would like to know how many shots hit the paper, which, at that range would be a feat in and of itself. The one shot that hit the 10" circle (out of 69 tries) is kind of a fluke. The fish is mute, expressionless. The fish doesn't think because the fish knows everything.

Doing the math on the stated flight time at standard acceleration of gravity (32 ft/sec/sec) works out to a bullet drop of 19,208 ft. over 24.5 seconds. That is some elevation! Kind of like lobbing it in. For those of you too lazy to do the division, 19,208 ft. is 3.63 miles. Avg. velocity looks like 951.91 ft./sec (distance/time), seems a reasonable value. But I'm wondering just how you deal with that amount of bullet drop. Hey Joe, I ran out of clicks on the scope!

Sure as hell wasn't Billy Dixon with his borrowed .50/90 Sharps at Adobe Walls. Yeah I know, only 1500 yards. ------------------------------------------------------------ "I have resolved to fight as long as Marse Robert has a corporal's guard, or until he says give up. A rules proposal… 1. The projectile recoil energy must be absorbed by the shooter without any device between the projectile delivering device (e.g. rifle) and the shooter. 2. The projectile delivering device (e.g. rifle) must be controlled by at least one hand of the shooter, and be stabilized and supported at one end by the shooter’s body 3. The projectile delivering device release mechanism (e.g. trigger) must be entirely mechanical and under the sole control of the shooter 4. The target must be entirely and continuously visible to the shooter during aiming and launching of the projectile 5. The target must be viewed solely by the shooter through a sighting means affixed to the projectile delivering device 6. The sighting means shall only be constructed of metal and coated clear substances such as glass 7. The projectile shall be constructed of no more than two materials 8. The projectile shall be monolithic construction 9. The projectile shall not have any external guidance 10. The projectile shall not have any means to exert force in any direction ------- Trying to simplify my life...

I like what he has to say about it. He’s being honest. He admits that Paul Phillips is a superior shooter. Basically they did this for fun (and some marketing). There are plenty on here quick to criticize what they accomplished, calling it a Hail Mary, a fluke, it’s 1/69, etc. If it’s that easy, why aren’t you breaking his record today? I’m sure there was some luck involved, but there is also quite a bit of skill, 1/69 or not. I’m certain I couldn’t make that shot, even if you gave me 690 rounds. I’m just not trained or skilled at long distance shooting. Good on them. I’m happy they made the shot and whether it was luck, Hail Mary, fluke, or God’s hand directing the bullet, they still accomplished something pretty cool. The “lol” thread

What’s remarkable about a feat like that is what was necessary to make it possible even with 69 attempts, and that’s what’s interesting to me: what’s necessary to drive a projectile that far with some degree of accuracy and what’s necessary to allow the gun to even be aimed at the target. That said, yes, if someone gave me all that gear and support I could score a hit on a target that size with enough attempts. The article mentioned the feat’s being equivalent to hitting a pinhead at 100 yards, but I disagree. With 70 rounds to use I could go out this morning with any of several of my guns and hit a pinhead at 100 yards, and probably with a lot fewer than 69 shots. But even if it were a blustery day I wouldn’t be facing the challenges that were involved in that accomplishment, and that is why I appreciated learning about the effort. ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. Yeah, the analogy is bad. I'm terrible, but I could hit a pinhead at 100 yards without much trouble given enough rounds. It's probably more like trying to hit a pinhead at a mile. "The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people." "Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy." "I did," said Ford, "it is." "So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?" "It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want." "You mean they actually vote for the lizards." "Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course." "But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?" "Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Help! Help! I'm being repressed! |
I looked at the video with the cardboard target with the orange paint dot in the middle. I never see the impact. Are my eyes just bad?

I think nobody saw the actual impact, including them (they originally thought the sound was it hitting the bunker roof). The close-up at the end of the video confirmed the hit. Maybe they should have used a Shoot•N•C. EDIT: I just re-watched the video on a full screen. I can just barely see the hole appear.
