OXFORD, Miss. - The FBI indicted 14 law enforcement officers from the Mississippi Delta and charged them in connection with a years-long drug smuggling operation, according to Mississippi State Attorney Clay Joyner.

The officers allegedly involved worked for agencies across the region and included the sheriff of Humphreys County, Mississippi, and a patrolman with the Mississippi Highway Patrol. Joyner said the officers are accused of accepting bribes to aid drug trafficking across the region and even into Memphis.

The state's attorney said the FBI's operation into the drug trafficking dates back at least four years and began when drug dealers, upon arrest, complained of paying bribes to local authorities. At least two of those bribes were for $20,000 and $37,000, according to Joyner.

One group of defendants aided in the transport of "what they thought was" 25 kilos of cocaine into Memphis, the state's attorney said. Joyner later described that operation as a "sting," noting that real drugs were not used in the incident, but the officers involved believed that they were smuggling real cocaine.

Charges against another officer stem from a trip to Miami he took with other defendants.

Second verse, same as the first.

Arkansas went through the same thing about a decade ago. A bunch of Arkansas cops from agencies in our Delta area (just across the Mississippi River from these MS cops) were rounded up by the FBI for aiding drug trafficking to/from Memphis.

It doesn't help the situation that the AR/MS Delta area is extremely poor, and their LE agencies don't pay worth a damn, so they don't have the best and brightest as cops.

Low wages and low standards breed opportunities for corruption, especially with a major drug trafficking hub next door.

Any time law enforcement is compromised, it is a tragedy!

We, certainly myself, put our faith and trust in law officers; to have that abrogated to the extent of the numbers reported is simply horrific.

One hopes justice is swift!

That pretty much sums it up.

Gang activity is also out of control.

Here are just some of the headlines from the Delta area over the last couple of years.

"14 people shot after concert in Mississippi, police say"

"MS sheriff issues travel warning after reports of highway shootings"

"Leland residents work to recover after mass shooting" 6 dead, more than a dozen injured.

"3 killed, around 16 wounded in mass shooting in Indianola"

Hurting for money?
Get a side job or get a different job.
And no, runnin’ dope isn’t a viable option for secondary employment.

Enjoy prison.

And some cops, just like some in society are just thugs and crooks. Not withstanding what they get paid or the benefits they receive. Those two things are not always tied together. These guys are just criminals. Nothing more, nothing less.

I was about to say the same. My former boss was an FBI agent in that sting.
