One of those things that I've always wanted to buy, but never have. I've been in plenty of weddings where the tux is essentially pre picked by the bride or groom. Some 19 year old kid takes their measurements and 9 weeks later I get a rental tux that is nowhere near my size. Every single time.

I would welcome the opportunity to buy my own if it came down to it.

Buy it and have it tailored. You will feel like a million bucks. I did that, for an ex-girlfriend's wedding. Looking better than the groom? Priceless Wink

In my former jobs I wore one several times a year. If you think you may need it more than once, buy it. You are also going to need shirt, cufflinks, studs, bowtie, cummerbund or vest, and shoes. And a low profile shoulder holster. I think I bought my last one at Men's Wearhouse

Have you easily maintained the same weight for the last 3 years, with no plans to change?
Will you really wear it 2 times this year?

Yes to both, then buy. Otherwise rent.

Sorry, who are you again?

This is firearms discussion forum. Why don't I see anything in your brief posting history on the subject of firearms?

And just like that, you have my attention. Congratulations.

Buy, I bought one years ago and have worn it multiple times, formals, my wedding, opera, a work skit, etc.. If you cruise as I understand they used to have a formal dinner with the captain that requires formal dress, so I will be ready if I ever take a cruise. Don’t forget to buy the shoes, no plastic sole rentals, only comfort!

Whoa, whoa, whoa... I think this deserves a thread drift. How the hell did you invited to an ex's wedding or is this some Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places thing.

Back to the topic, I vote rent.

Good advice. You can often buy for about twice the price of renting. If you use it more than twice you come out ahead. Of course, if you put on too much weight... you won't be able to wear it again... Frown

The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible."

Buy. Bought mine years ago and have paid for it three times over. As for shoes, though, I just polish up my Blundies. No one notices and I'm much more comfortable than wearing patent leather or breaking in a new pair.

As has been said, if its for weddings, they will pick out different ones every time anyway, so whatever you buy will be no good.

Most rentals will do some minor tailoring for you.

If you are going to drop money on a tailored piece of clothing, get a suit, not a tux. You will get much more use out of that. How many times do you really need a tux? And will it still be in fashion? Will it still fit?

OK, but are we really talking about something practical here, or a luxury item that we just enjoy owning? It says something about a man if he can reach into his closet and pull out a Tuxedo.

Yeah, next opportunity, I'll buy one.

I've only personally known one person (roughly my age) to own a tux. Sharp, of Crossharp Sharp Blues Review, wore a tux straight from the cleaners at every gig. Guess he had a deal on the cleaning and pressing.

If you might need a tux six times in the next ten years and are pretty sure you will not gain weight, buy it. Or not. :-)

Buy one but not off the rack. Have it fitted so you do not look like a clown.
If you are a diplomat and live in DC you will get good use of it. Remember the expression "he was all over her like a cheap suit."

Can you even buy a Tux off the rack? Pants wont have a hem in them at the very least. Also no one has exactly same length arms. Always have any nice clothing tailored. It makes all the difference in the world.

I bought about 15 years ago and have no regrets. I take it on certain cruises we take from year to year, and actually like to dress up periodically (and my wife really likes it). I've used it at least as much for other events. Like ZS & Skins say, have it fitted by a tailor, and build in some extra waist for your later years. I suggest a classic, black tux, w/single-breasted jacket; they won't go out of style.

I agree. My grandfather was a master tailor from Europe. He did very well.
