FAIL.

275 E ramp to 71 S. 39F, heavy rain.

I stopped since no one else did. 5 other cars stopped after me. One already on the phone with 911. I checked on him, he was unharmed, seatbelt & airbags did their jobs. Guess he was oblivious to SUV's higher center of gravity. Assuming he was cited for Failure to Control.

Just my 2 cents but a lot of people think that their ABS will help them in slick icy conditions. God Bless !!! Smile

It's absolutely amazing how bad of a wreck people walk away from with minor to no injuries in modern cars.

Cars in decades past...I've seen people die from what looked like a fender bender.

It will, but it won't perform miracles.

E.g.: Sunday evening snowstorm. Bitterly cold. Heavy snow. Blowing like snot. Power went out at work. I went in. Somebody had to, and it would have been much, much rougher for the facilities maintenance guy than me. So I went.

Damn near white-out conditions and seriously icy patches. There was this one stretch on one road that had quite a significant grade with a traffic light at a busy intersection at the bottom. "Ok, that grade is bound to be slicker'n cat snot on a glass doorknob," I thought to myself. So I hit the top of it at 10-15 MPH. (Speed limit on that road is 45 MPH.)

It was glass all the way down.

I touched the brakes lightly for a test and the ABS kicked in immediately. It did the best it could to get me stopped by the bottom. I still ended-up halfway into that intersection. Of course the light was just changing against me as I reached the bottom. I carefully backed up into the right turn lane under the assumption the next car might do even worse.

Were it not for both my foresight and ABS I certainly would've skated right through that intersection--if I was lucky.

How old was the driver?

Was this a tricked-out rig or, a suburban owner thinking they had an invincible road master?

Last fall we headed out from Montana to Florida. We waited too long and ran into about 350 miles of absolutely horrible, snow covered, slick, ice and generally hazardous roads. We came across about 20 4x4 pickups in the barrow pit. Some wheels up and some wheels up. The FWD outfits did fine - including mine.

Thanks Steve. I was amazed no one stopped. I was only doing what I hope someone would do for me.

That’s the biggest RAV4 in existence. That’s got to be a Sequoia based on the spare tire location. It’s always been either on the rear hatch or under the back floor inside the vehicle. Don’t believe the RAV ever had rims like that, too.

For you Tye-oty folks, what is the oblong black perforated object across from the muffler? Is it a hybrid battery?

Pretty sure that is the fuel tank covered by a plastic pan.

Though I am almost positive that is a Sequoia as RAV4s are not RWD nor would they have a 6 lug spare. Also only the new RAV4s rear hatch open up. The older ones open to the side.

I know that interchange very well.
When dry and in a properly suited vehicle it can be done at a decent rate of speed. Wink

The interchange on the opposite side of the highway going from N 71 to W275 can be done at a much much higher rate of speed.

Looks like it has retractable running boards. That's too fancy for a Rav4.

When I defend these cases in court I always wonder what an officer's mentality is for issuing a ticket like this in a one-vehicle, one-occupant accident. What purpose would giving someone a ticket for this serve? People make mistakes, with the high center of gravity, it probably wasn't that severe of an accident. The guy got his car totaled and is out his deductible. His insurance rates will increase. He's going to be sore. He had a bad day. His insurance will pay for the guardrail, in some states the accident report with property damage against the State will ding his driving record (in Iowa it does if the officer said you caused monetary damage to someone's lawn). Unless per se negligence needs to be established with a ticket or the officer observed it, I just don't see the point and it seems pretty chickensh#t. I'm all ears though.

That is a Sequoia. RAV4’s are front drive and unibody. This is a rear wheel drive setup with a full frame.
