What do you guys take or do for better health?
I’m 58, over weight and out of shape. I’ve been on the weight loss merry go round for 25 years.
I work 48-60 hours a week.
Healthy diet consists on bacon, sausage, ribeyes and barbecue.
I do two things right now.

I’ve been drinking Chaga tea for 3 years now. Every morning I drink a cup. It is supposed to boost your immune system, and many other things including fight cancer.
I do know I was getting sick very often before, but now I can ride in a car with someone who is sick or kiss my wife without catching whatever she has. I would estimate 90% improvement.

I also take Cardio Chelate. About 25 years ago I met with a nutritionist and he stated this was a must take.
I’m 280 pounds my BP and cholesterol as normal. My wife had her cholesterol tested 6 months ago, and again last week. I finally talked her into trying it. She dropped from 247 to below 200. Good cholesterol went up. I’ve had several friends use it also with good results.
I may keel over tomorrow, but I believe it helps.

Please do your own research. Just wanted to share.

So, any other secrets out there? Hopefully not eat kale and run marathons....

I would definitely not suggest marathons. Does as much harm as good (personal experience with several of them). But if you're not willing to establish a routine of a reasonably nutritious diet and regular exercise, you're at a real disadvantage in achieving your stated goal. Join a YMCA. My experience -- Make friends with people there, and you'll find that routines easier and more stable.

Get a bike.

Ride a few miles at a time, get some endurance, ride a few more. Graduate to a “hybrid” type bike (skinnier tires than a regular bike but a bit fatter than a road bike). Fast, fun and the weight will drop off.

I googled "Cardio Chelate" and this was the first thing that popped up:
quote:
EDTA can cause abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, low blood pressure, skin problems, and fever. It is UNSAFE to use more than 3 grams of EDTA per day, or to take it longer than 5 to 7 days. Too much can cause kidney damage, dangerously low calcium levels, and death.

Eat kale and run marathons. Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

You didn't say how tall you are, but 280 seems pretty heavy. That would be my first priority. Start walking and moving more. The study that came out last week shows that ALL exercise matters. Those 20 second bursts of cardio going up the stairs add up. Heck, in your current condition, that may be working your heart more than a skinny 20 year old running a mile! If you are working 40-60 hours, you're not likely to stick to a gym routine. You may never get to a "normal" BMI, but at least shoot for the low "overweight" category as a goal. (25-28) Most studies show little increase in morbidity at that level.

IMO: The next two most important things are not smoking and watching your BP. The abuse of your arteries due to hypertension makes them more vulnerable to the effects of cholesterol.

Eat a balanced diet and then stop when you are full. People keep on eating because it tastes good.

Keep active. Exercising or just outdoor activities like going for a walk.

I'm 71 and weighed 161 pounds this morning. I'm lucky, we have a small farm (70 acres) and there are always fences to fix and cutting up trees that have fallen. I do all the maintenance on our vehicles and tractor also have about 3 acres of grass that I cut during the summer. Just keep busy.

I have a BIL that is a year younger than me and I worry about him all the time. He's gained a lot of weight and just doesn't get outside and do things anymore. They sold their farm a year ago and now live in a subdivision. Shoot, he hires someone to mow his small yard and blow away the leaves now. He has all the equipment to do that stuff, just doesn't have the motivation. He even got a hold of a handicapped sticker so he doesn't have to walk much. Good grief.

My friend Joe is a preacher of healthy intake. I will start trying to heed his advice soon. No breads, pasta or, sugars. Also, many of the oils used in snack foods and candy cause inflamations. For now I take a multi vitamin and vitamin C only. I watch my friend eat bell peppers like a apple. Nothing left but the stem. One whole lemon per day as a great intoxant. Thats powerfyl medicine. Darn guy can about suck bananas out of the peel. Citrus fruits he gobbles down. At 79 his blood sugar is perfect, his vision is better than mine at 59.

I’ve been in fairly decent shape most of my life but the odometer is getting higher miles and I’d let my weight creep up. Blood pressure was getting to bad levels, joints hurting more than normal. I was 207lbs at 5’11” and my ideal weight is 180-185. I cut sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes and only 1-2 beers a day. That was Oct 5 and today I’m 188lbs. Even with a beer festival Saturday and Thanksgiving in a few days I’m still on target to hit my goals by year’s end. Got plenty extra room to carry IWB now. As many here will tell you, you can NOT put exercise a bad diet.

That's probably my monthly intake, I could stand to lose about 30 pounds.

At 6'3" I weighed 155 pounds when I met my wife, 1974. Yeah, I looked like a stick figure. Running around 205 now, would like to get down to 175 or so. Maybe cut out those 1 or 2 beers / month would help. Wink

I'm watching another forum member, good friend of mine, he has lost nearly forty pounds recently, diet and exercise. An inspiration. Wish I could follow his example.

I cut back from around 4-7 a day and I drink the snobby craft beer that’s usually up around 7% or higher so those calories were a huge factor.

Eat most of your calories in the morning or midday. Almost all calories eaten at night are stored as fat, unless you work like a farmer during the day.

Reduce carbs to about 10% of the diet. Try to get some exercise several times a week. Walking or riding to work can be very helpful, keeps your metabolic rate up and you can eat more and still lose weight!

“Breakfast turns to gold, lunch to silver, and dinner to lead”

Food eaten and digested is turned into amino acids (protein), fatty acids (fat) short chain sugar molecules (glucose). Glucose is used by the body to convert ADP into its energy cell, ATP.

Once the body’s current energy need for ATP is fulfilled, it converts remaining glucose into long chains called glycogen. Glycogen is then stored in the muscles and the liver. Glycogen is used for short and medium term energy needs. Any remainder glycogen is then stored as fat.

Therefore the calories from a large meal eaten in the evening are primarily stored as fat. “Once a fat, always a fat”, this phrase refers to the body’s inability to burn fat by itself. Humans need to burn some carbohydrates while burning fat.

The following information may be of assistance when controlling body weight:

• When eating a high carbohydrate meal, be sure to include some protein plus fats/oils. The fat produces “carb specific satiety”, which reduces hunger for more carbs. If your meal includes some fat, usually within minutes the great desire for additional food, especially carbs, is diminished.

• When some fat is included with the meal, the fat slows down digestion. This enables a person to burn the ingested calories, rather than quickly storing them as fat. An example is having one egg in the morning, with cereal.

• A third method to reduce fat storage is to eat slower digesting carbohydrates such as whole grains rather than food made from white flour. Replacing cold cereal (out of a box) with 9-Grain hot cereal provides energy for several hours duration. Of course, eating only a moderate amount of carbs is also effective.
• When eating in the evening, try to eat fairly early. 6:00 pm works well if sleeping by 10 pm. This gives your body a chance to burn the calories that were ingested at dinner. All extra calories not burned are then turned into fat.

• Fruits and vegetables provide quite a bit of nutrition, but eventually you have a strong desire for some protein and fat in the diet. Rather than overeating junk food when you become hungry, try eating good food and a balanced diet during the day.

• The more you exercise, the more you can eat. The best exercise for burning fat is medium intensity for moderate to long duration. Low intensity and very high intensity exercise burns mostly stored glucose, not fat.

• One of the best exercises is hiking which is easy to do for many hours, and improves almost all areas of the body.

• The most effective exercise is named “push-aways”. This is done when you push your self away from the dinner table before overeating.

I went to the Dr. two months ago, and my Cholesterol was through the roof, I know bad is in the 200 range mine was 477 (and yes 477 is what they said) since then I have completely changed my diet, turkey, chicken, salad and fish.

I have lost 10lbs, I am down to 192 from 202 I am 5" 10" so the weight loss was a bonus.

And so far being on the new diet has not bothered me at all, and yes I am starting to exercise more, I will give it another month and then go have my cholesterol checked again and see if it has went down any.

Maybe it was a bad reading (very doubtful) but I don't want to wait a year for another test.

But I am definitely healthier now than I was two months ago.

Have good genes.

Eat sensibly, exercise, at least a little.

(Of those, I only have the good genes.)

I don't think there are any miracle elixers or tonics. It is all snake oil. Fad diets don't help, even if only because they are unsustainable.

I drink a gallon of water a day or more and have been for going on 20 years. It's become a addiction. I can't leave the house with out my water bottle in my hand. I tell people it's how I know I'm not a alcoholic. I can go days or weeks without a beer or cocktail but if my water bottle is not in reach I can feel a panic begin to well up!

I eat at least one serving of beets a day. Usually the pickled ones but sometimes the ones from a can. I understand they are very good for you but that's not necessarily why I eat them I just love 'em!!

I'm 63 5'10" and go about 170. I could drop a few as I'm getting a bit of a belly. I fully retired in June so I'm not as active on a daily basis as I was. Noticing a few aches and pains like in the knees and shoulders. I'm guessing I need to find ways to stay a bit more active but now that winter is setting in that's going to be a little more difficult. I'm not one to join a gym I will find ways to do it on my own. Probably start taking walks on days when weather permits and maybe some light free weight exercises to keep things limber. I'll have to research some exercise routines for the seasoned citizen! The problem with most diets is that they make you crave the things you need to stop eating. Try a copy of the "Zone Diet". It's more about eating the right stuff so that you don't crave the crap you shouldn't eat.

It's a secret so I ain't tellin'. Ha, seriously, it feels like a superpower to not crave. Hunger is normal. Low insulin anti-inflammatory diet and keep moving.

Cool fact: daily we produce our bodyweight equivalent in ATP. however, if ATP production were interrupted we would only have 6 seconds in reserve (cyanide).

There are approximately 1.3x more organisms within our gut than there are human cells in our body.

Cut out the deep friend foods, soda's, and candy bars/sugars. Keep breads and pastas to a minimum. Keep alcohol to a minimum. Get plenty of rest. Every once in a while just take a "Screw it" day from work. Exercise regularly.

There are no secrets. I eat anything, no restricted food, just not overdoing it.
No smoking. No drinking. Exercise (walking/jogging) minimum 3x a week. Might not work for everyone, but it does for me.
