Note that I have a large spinner for a main suitcase, and wouldn't want anything else for that purpose. But I took it down sidewalks in Paris this fall and that was to put it mildly, a shitshow. I need a new carry on, and airline pros almost universally seem to go with rollaways, but I'm far more likely to just wheel the thing around an airport. Spinners don't do very well on sidewalks, though.

What say ye?

I use an older 5.11 roller, not sure they make the model anymore. Typically travel for work with at least 60+ pounds of stuff. I've replaced the wheels on it with the biggest inline skate wheels that would fit on it. Too big to carry on though, have to check it... Wink

I use 4 wheel spinners.

When I need just 2 wheels I just lay it over onto two wheels and use it that way.

I say rollaway. I've seen lots of broken spinner wheels, though most are caused by baggage handlers, not passengers who gentler with their bags.

Our check bags are all rollaway, here's the carry on (my wayward son) I sometimes bring:

I use 4 wheel spinners but I understand the downside on slopped floors and sidewalk ramps. But the benefit of being able to easily roll two spinners at the same time easily outweighs the extra precaution needed when I'm parking the bags.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." 4 wheel spinners and I seldom check a bag. I also carry a laptop case that fits under a seat. When I do check a bag it is also a 4 wheel spinner.

I'm an aviation pro, main go to is rollaboard, tried mixing it up last year and got a spinner, worst mistake ever. I mostly drove it as a rollaboard and those stupid tiny wheels are just not up to the job. Don't know how long it lasted before the wheels just exploded but it was my shortest bag ever. Went back to the rollaboard, the main wheels are much beefier and can handle the rigors of traveling every day. Bumpy sidewalks, up and down stairs, nothing bothers them. The spinny wheels can't handle the abuse.

Back when I was a high-tier frequent flyer, I bought Briggs & Riley with spinners. Huge upgrade over my old roll-on Samsonite.

When I went on a tour of Italy, I didn't want spinners or rollers for going over those uneven 1000 year old bricks. I bought a 65 liter Pacsafe Venturesafe backpack for my checked bag and a 10 liter Pacsafe Venturesafe frontpack for my carry-on. Bonus was the built-in antitheft features (Pisa was the worst for pickpockets). Other people on the tour had a hell of a time navigating the sidewalks.

I have a ZUCA Pro carry on, had it for years, my wife has one too.

Small, efficient, lightweight. It also doubles as a seat when standing in line. Great urethane roller-blade wheels for rolling on sidewalks, easy to store in overhead bins. This and a small backpack, I can travel for days.

Travelpro spinners for us. Easy to maneuver on flat ground. It’s a small item so lifting it is not difficult on any other terrain.

Personally, I prefer 2-wheel rollers, HOWEVER I understand the attraction for 4-wheel spinners.

Spinners are far and away more popular than rollers.
Hardsides are more popular with younger customers, whereas soft-sides are more popular with the Gen-X and Boomer generation.

Purchasing quality luggage is one of the great investments that is sure to pay-off, even if you only use it once a year or every other year. Personally, I've found Briggs & Riley and Eagle Creek to be top-notch, the warranty policies are good indicators for luggage quality. Hard sides if you can afford Rimowa, go for it, however if you can afford that stuff, you probably also flying in private/chartered jets. Away hard sides are pretty popular, I've found Monos has a more durable finish.

Roller gives +2" of storage. Spinner has more mobility when upright. Roller is more stable when being pulled-wheels only go in one direction.

Travel Pro Platinum spinner is my favorite bag. I’m rolling it on two wheels about half the time but I like the option of having the four wheels on the ground when I need to “push” rather than pull.

I use an OGIO Layover Bag and it fit in the overhead bin and is lightweight and roomy inside. They are always on sale and you can earn point for free Callaway swag.

If I'm flying with a small gun safe, it has an inside pocket that my Vaultek safe fits in perfectly and has the TSA type of zips that can accept those stupidly overpriced locks.

I think the invention of the inline skate 2 wheel rollaway is one of the better inventions in the history of MANKIND! Cool . I worked at airports for 15 years, and have observed this fairly closely. The spinners work okay, most of the time inside the terminal. Their effectiveness fall apart pretty quickly when you go outside, and it's fairly common for one of their little wheels to break. I will only ever have 2 wheel rollaways.

I have a few SIGs.
