Ends with the walk of shame!

Yeah, maybe getting out of the gas would have been a good idea. He thought it was WRC....

The problem was that he lifted. Basic entry should have been slower (better braking) then on the gas to accelerate out of turn. He lifted because he was too hot to brake in turn and that shifted weight forward - causing oversteer and back end to rotate. He then counter steered and tried to accelerate (look at front tires) and all this did is finish throwing him into the wall.
When learning to drive on track, had an instructor that taught me "Friends don't let friends lift" and "physics is a bitch"
Walk of shame indeed.

That executive is Mark Reuss who is a certified industry pool test driver on the North Course of the Nürburgring Motorsport Racetrack in Germany, and is licensed for FIA C and IMSA Road Racing.
Lots of pro's have moments like that. Just accepted when they are racing. Not nearly as embarrassing.
Guess he forgot he was on street tires....

The car cost $120,000. That's about one weeks pay for him.

Even if it was totaled you're probably correct.

And, cold tires I suspect.

He actually has, so I think this was a surprise to everyone involved.

Mostly just a lot of asphalt-to-concrete surface changes throughout the entire track. Not the easiest place to drive, but you're also in the pace car with traction/stability control and ABS while the pros get none of that and, for the most part, didn't crash.

Compare the GM press release pablum, with the exec's honest and direct apology.
GM It is unfortunate that this incident happened. Many factors contributed, including weather and track conditions. The car’s safety systems performed as expected.
Mark Reuss It is never a casual thing for me, but an honor to be asked. Today I let down my friends, my family, IndyCar, our city and my company. Sorry does not describe it. I want to thank our engineers for providing me the safety I know is the best in the world.

Sounds like he is actually pretty skilled, anyone can have a bad day.
"The odds are Reuss hit a mid-curve bump at just the wrong angle, launching the ‘Vette hard into the wall.
“It's very easy to do as you go over that crest, and the traction control must have been turned off,” Indy 500-winning driver Will Power said Sunday. “So yeah, I felt — wasn't really his fault. It's just such a bad corner. Like it's very easy to do … You know, that's racing, right? I've seen plenty of pace car crashes. Like I've seen plenty of people coming off in the wet and crash, and not abnormal.”
Reuss has mad skills. He’s one of just 30 engineers in all of GM who are certified to drive development vehicles on the diabolical Nurburgring Nordschliefe, Germany’s legendary 13-mile, 73-turn road course. He’s also licensed to drive FIA C and IMSA Road Racing cars.
He’s not a suit who was showing off and ran out of road and skill. Reuss led GM’s performance division for years. Now he oversees the development of some of the world’s fastest street cars, and he does it from the driver’s seat.
Not many of us would have wanted to be in his seat Sunday."
"We've done four already, but now we're steady..."
