In case it helps, here's what we found last week. Our 20+ year old AC failed and our Honeywell thermostat was the round, simple type from around 2004. An HVAC tech visited and first found the thermostat was running the AC fan even when the AC was turned to the 'off' position. He ended up replacing the thermostat, a capacitor on the AC, and added a half pound of freon. All is well a few days later. Capacitors and thermostats seem to be failure points that aren't too expensive to replace.

I know nothing about thermostats, in fact, I have one with similar problems to yours. I just wanted to say that the thread title is great! Made me smile on a tough Tuesday!! * --- Sig 365, 365XL, 245, P6 *

Glad I could make you smile a bit. I am guessing I will not be smiling when the repairman comes tomorrow. My YouTubing found that low refrigerant can cause a unit not to shut down. I shut it off at the unit lastnight and tried it again. Same results except now the unit is not blowing cold air nor will it shut off no matter where you set the thermostat. So I am afraid all of most of the refrigerant may be gone. 3 years ago it was going to cost $850 to recharge the upstairs system since it uses the refrigerant that is no longer made and only reclaimed. Where the leak was had obviously been repaired numerous times. Fella said he would gladly repair it for $25 but the refrigerant would be $850 and could not promise how long the repair would last considering it clearly had been repaired multiple times. We opted to put that $875 into a new system with 10 year warranty. So we have kind of been waiting for this one to bite the dust too. So we shall see! ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. I will be your brother, and I'll hold your hand. $50 fix!! The contractor on the outside unit was fried! May add the cheapo Nest so I can program the unit to not run as much at night. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If that's all you want to do, you don't need a Nest. We had an inexpensive Honeywell that was programmable for four time periods on each day of the week
The thermostat was relatively inexpensive, I think it was around fifty bucks or so. When we got a new HVAC unit, it came with a new thermostat. The new one had the same features as the previous one that I described, but there was a promotion to upgrade it to the same one with the addition of WiFi at no extra charge, so any of the settings can be changed from any computer, smart phone, iPad, etc. that has internet access. Very handy. AC is set for 85° during the day when nobody is home, but if I wrap things up at work a couple hours early, I can start the cooling down to the evening setting before I leave work. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

Technically it was contacting just fine, it was the decontacting that was your issue. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Hence the reason I said it would not stop contacting. Was trying to be clever with my title again and that was the best I could come up with. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have.
