I just learned this today... I learned today that a former Chief of my old Dept was the Chief of a Dept in NY in 2001. One if his newly promoted Captains was at fire officer school at FDNY for a week. He and a few classmates had dinner at Engine 54 / 4 Truck on 9/10. By 1030 the next morning everyone they ate with was dead. The class deployed to the site that afternoon and spent two weeks there working. He died 5 years later due to cancer from what he inhaled on the scene. I was working traffic at Denver ARTCC and had to empty the skies. We told aircraft where they were going to land whether they liked it or not. They were not happy about that at all. Within two hours the airspace was completely empty. A very surreal event. My condolences to all who lost their lives and their family that day.
