Mrs Gear found the pictured item at a local goodwill for a few bucks. She thought it was neat and being the inquisitive type set out to try and figure just what it is she found. I will describe it as best I can. All attempts to find something on the internet using several different descriptive words were unsuccessful. I have seen many odd objects identified on SF, so I’m asking the collective.

The item in question is a spherical object weighing 1 lb 7 oz. It has a diameter of approximately 5”. The covering appears to be brass sheets that are tacked onto a core with small nails. You can see the nails in picture 1. The nails tacking down the brass sheets suggest that the core material is wood. I have no idea what the patterns mean. It is clearly made for displaying as there is a lack of any dents or abrasions to indicate a physical usage.

My gut says it is in the category of “Indian schlock” but we are open to suggestions.

Now that some of us have had our fun, that looks like a Christmas ornament. I've hunted around the 'net, but my google-fu is weak. I'll keep looking.
