Hey bendable! Thanks! Wheelchair related.

bigpond73Hey bendable! Thanks! Wheelchair related.
A few years back, Mr. bendable (i believe, someone correct me if I am wrong) wrote here and posted pics of a truck allowing wheelchair access.
It got me thinking. My sister has had Multiple Sclerosis since she was 20. She has been in a wheelchair since. Anyone who has transported someone wheelchair bound knows how difficult it can be in a) loading a person, and chair into a vehicle, b) transporting a person and chair in a vehicle, and c) unloading a chair and person from a vehicle.
Bendable's post was about a Chevy Pickup. It led my sister and her husband on a chase of similar vehicles, and they settled on a Honda Pilot. This thing has a ramp that allows my sister to "drive in" with her wheelchair, and be positioned as a passenger in the front seat.
She and her husband are currently en route to CO from San Diego. Here are a few pics from them stopping by to see my aunt and uncle near Vegas:
So, Mr. bendable, my sincere thanks, and if we ever meet, I owe ya one.
Mike

She is in a motorized chair, and even with a non motorized one, does need to be strapped down. There are tie down points, like you would find on a trailer, and her husband uses some tie down straps to secure her. Not sure what size, but am sure they are sufficient for the airbag ratings.
She isn't sloshing around, lol.

Once they get here, I can take better pics of the tie downs.
They are having a great time. It is hard to get my sister in and out, and to places. For her to travel is beyond amazing.

bald1Anything to improve the mobility challenges is awesome. Kudos to your sister's husband for providing this rig and getting her out on a road trip which no doubt will generate many many fond memories for her.

That would be great as I have a family member that would benefit from this info.

The other day, I got to visit, and my sister's husband showed me the way she gets secured.
There are 6 of these hold down slots, 2 way up front where your feet would be, 2 about midway where the rear posts of the front passenger seat would be placed, and 2 at the front of the rear seat. They look like this:
Then he has these quick release type straps (pictured are the two front ones):
So, they just pull up where they want, her husband opens the side doors, unstraps, pulls down a ramp (installed about midway on vehicle), and she just drives her scooter down the ramp and away she goes.
It's a pretty slick setup, and saves them both from having to transfer her from her chair to the vehicle, and vehicle to chair.
