As cumbersome as the process was, I don’t recall any monetary charge.

Extra $20 or $30

Real ID is a federal requirement the states are mandated to implement. Trying to get a standardized ID across all states was one of the legislative pushes post-9/11. If you plan to fly or access govt property, you'll need it.

Retired Military ID IS a real ID

Mine was a complete farce. I gathered all the BS documents and trotted off to the SOS office. Clerk did not even look at the documents and just issued the new ID.

Passport and global entry card

Not giving the state a penny for an id card. If they think I should have one, they can send it to me.

Real ID is just noise and way to swindle more money from you.

Military ID.
Passport.
Birth certificate.

When I renewed my FL Driver’s Licence.

Easy peasy.

When I moved to Arkansas, my FL “Real ID” was sufficient for Arkansas Real ID.

I don't think Ohio charges extra for a real ID. I didn't have any issues getting it. My kids didn't and they don't have any bills in their name. I think they took school report cards as proof since those are mailed now. It's been awhile.

I had issues with other things (like car loans) because all my work paystubs say phil and not phillip, but my w2s say phillip. weird.

Not minority enough!

The funny thing is a Retired military ID will get you on a plane. My wife uses her dependant ID to fly. CA wouldn't issue my wife a real ID because of the name change after we were married.she was born in Taiwan but was a Japanese citizen and her dad changed her name when they came to the states, but they have no issues with giving every illegal a driver's license.

The only reason I got a CA real ID is because they required it to buy firearms.

Getting my FL real ID was VERY painless.

MA rejected my laminated SS card.

I had to order a new one.

It was the original style from a long time ago.

The stupid thing is when I got my original license in the 1970s they used my SS# for my license number and I am sure it is still in the computer.

Update:

Went this morning around 9 am expecting a line out the door but it actually went pretty quickly and smoothly.

The place is MASSIVE with probably 120 seats inside and 12 counters

Had all my docs ready and checked in, the guy did not give me any problems over my secondary docs just having a middle initial "J" as opposed to my SSN card and birth certificate of full middle name of "John". He thanked me for being a Veteran and also being ready to go (I even brought my own clipboard LOL) and handed me two forms to fill out while waiting. I did that and then listened to him deal with all the people who came in after me (it suddenly got REALLY busy) who didn't have the right docs or had one in one name like a maiden name and one in a married name etc. He was polite but firm and some people were getting a little belligerent about it. I could not do that job all day dealing with people like that.

Was seen in like 15-20 min then sat and did the process and the guy mentioned that my new DL would have my full middle name and not "J" like the old one but that was about it, he did not give me any trouble over anything.

Then had to go to another waiting area to get picture taken and DL printed.

Was in and out the door in 50 minutes which was great because my FIL went a few months back and was there like 6 hours. Eek
