Artist Statement: This ‘drill bit’ type of tornado is a rare anti-cyclonic tornado, which happens in around 2% of tornadoes. It touched down in open farmland, narrowly missing a home near Simla, Colorado as it tore up the ground, gathering the soil giving it its brown color.

DPR

anticyclonic tornado: An anticyclonic tornado is a tornado which rotates in a clockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere and a counterclockwise direction in the Southern.

What would it have been like to be the one standing in the field filming that.

That is an awesome photo. Terrifyingly awesome. That's one nice thing about living in Indiana...we have tornadoes, but when compared to the more western portions of the midwest, they aren't really tornadoes at all...

Some of those long-track, super cell tornadoes - Joplin, Tuscaloosa - are a half mile and more on the ground.

Quick side note. A couple of years ago I spent 18 mos doing volunteer work in Tuscaloosa. We lived a mile from the tornado path. I also worked with a fellow who went through the Joplin tornado, his house was used as a base station for FEMA.

It reminds me of Patrick Swayze in the movie Tall Tale.

He played Pecos Bill,
He roped a twisted and rode of in too the sunset on it
