I am wondering how much information they get from a blood draw ? If they took a whole cup and divided it up. Besides type and pos. Or neg. And I am having a gall bladderectomy soon But they don't seem interested in either blood or urine samples , prior to this out patient procedure. Does that seem odd to anyone? Wait, what? |
A little under 2 years ago I had laparoscopic hernia surgery. There were no blood or urine tests for me. The only thing the doctors office and hospital cared about was a negative Covid test result. My guess for me at least was nothing short of being clearly sick was going to change the fact that I needed the procedure so it simply was not necessary. “Remember to get vaccinated or a vaccinated person might get sick from a virus they got vaccinated against because you’re not vaccinated.” - author unknown

Yes, I'm surprised they wouldn't do some blood work. Are they not doing any a day or two before the procedure? ___________________________ Avoid buying ChiCom/CCP products whenever possible.

In 2005 I was scheduled for a more-or-less routine cervical disk fusion to deal with a herniated disk in my neck. Two days before the procedure they had me go in for a "routine" blood test. That blood test revealed a severe anemic condition that triggered them to postpone my procedure. Investigation into the cause of the anemia ultimately determined I had colon cancer. If I hadn't had a sore neck that summer, I wouldn't be here now.

Prepared for the Worst, Providing the Best |
I had my annual blood test down on Monday. One small vial, and they tested it for all kinds of stuff. I was just checking out the results online today...there's a huge list of stuff they tested for and I don't even know what a lot of it means, but most of its in the green so I guess that's good.

My Doc just called with some results of blood work. I call back and the office is closed. The voice mail then pops up as usual an hour later. My results are good.He is considerate enough not to make we wait on a bunch or test results. You always remember when they told you had cancer.

This might help and contact your surgeon if you have any questions. I don't remember having blood drawn before my outpatient hernia surgery but I may be wrong as it's been a few years. Inpatient surgery resulted in a lot of blood draws. https://www.verywellhealth.com...fore-surgery-3156962 "Blood Tests Before Surgery Blood tests are frequently drawn before surgery. This is done for a number of reasons—to examine your general state of health, to determine if any signs of infection are present, or to determine how a specific organ is functioning." Common Pre-Surgery Blood Tests The specific tests your healthcare provider orders depends on multiple factors, but some common ones include: Complete blood count (CBC)2 Chem 7 blood chemistry panel Liver function panel (liver function tests, LFTs) PT/PTT/INR (coagulation study) Arterial blood gas (ABG) Pregnancy test ABO/Rh Type and Screen ABO/Rh Type and Cross https://www.uhhospitals.org/he...20%28PT%2FPTT%29.%20 You may also need 1 or more of these blood tests before surgery: Glucose. This test measures your blood sugar levels. Electrolytes. This test measures the amount of potassium, sodium, and other electrolytes in your blood. These chemicals help regulate heart rhythms and other body functions. Renal function studies. This test measures blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine to see how well the kidneys are functioning. Complete blood count (CBC). This test checks for a low number of red blood cells (anemia), a low platelet count, and infection. Coagulation studies (PT/PTT). These tests find out how well your blood clots.

grumpy is correct. I might add that they want to be sure you have sufficient red cells (Hemoglobin And hematocrit) for the operation. Do not want to operate on an anemic patient. The various chemicals are to be certain all of your organs are doing the job. There are truly a gadzillion things running around in your blood stream - I had a 50 year career in the clinical laboratory telling the doctors what they wanted to know. No quarter .308/.223

Nurse here for 25 years and currently working in a Family health rural clinic. We do multiple pre op physicals weekly, which include labs and EKG's. Now, based on the patient's history, type of procedure, and type of sedation, we will do a CBC and BMP/CMP based off of history. EKG's for anyone over 50 or again medical history. If the patient had a recent lab within the last month or EKG and are not symptomatic, we will use those. Again, it all depends on the patient's history, sedation type, and type of procedure. Example, vasectomy/colonoscopy vs total hip or knee replacement. Hope this helps. Sigs P-220, P-226 9mm, & P-230SL (CCW)

The urine test is most likely a drug test. They want to know what you May be on before anesthesia. Blood work is usually good for checking anemia,or any infection. _______________________________ 'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but > because he loves what is behind him.'
