KIEV, Ukraine - A surveillance camera captured an underground water pipe exploding Tuesday in the middle of a street in Kiev, Ukraine.

The video from ABC News shows the street bubbling up all of a sudden and bursting. Another view from the surveillance cameras shows water rushing down the street.

The explosion damaged cars and buildings nearby, but luckily no one was hurt.

It’s not clear what caused the pipe to burst.

How the hell does it build that much pressure? I've seen/been part of more than one water pipe bursting in my earlier life working in underground boring. While the effects and results were devastating I've never seen that kind of pressure released so suddenly.

I tried to find a news article on it but could not, but back in the early 2000's in Dallas we had a water main break when they were boring underground, the bit punched through and cause a river in downtown, it even flooded a parking garage and cars were floating around in it.
Cool thing was that they discovered an old abandoned rail or subway line in the cleanup.

It may have not been so much the pressure, but rather, the volume. The street could only hold back so much force and when it let go, BANG.

A 3' water main may only be moving product at 80# but the volume of water moved is a different story.

quantity = velocity x area

Q = liquid flow through a pipe. V = average velocity of the flow. A = cross-sectional area of the pipe.

That's what I was thinking. I know a lot of people would kill for that kind of water pressure to service their neighborhood.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
