Not familiar with the Mac universe but tge wife wants one lightweight, fashinoable computer to take to her favorite coffee store and do her CPA work over the internet.
Apple is a status symbol down here, absurdly expensive, no official presence therefore no support, warranty whatsoever.

Pretty fed up with MS, so i'm not willing to pay for Office365 subscription.
Microsoft has reduced its footprint to almost invisible in my country. Keeping the XBO is a gamble when it comes to Live Gold maintenance. Paying/buying abroad is a PITA, restrictions, whatnots...

I believe it requires Java so it's a no-go for me.

Apple offers replacement apps for the office suite. For example, Excel is replaced with Numbers.

Edit - it's called iWork. https://www.apple.com/iwork/

From what I understand, it is true LibreOffice requires Java. [See bald1's update below.]

One option to consider might be Google Sheets, Google Docs & Google Slides. Although I do have Office for Mac, I do use the Google stuff frequently especially for anything that needs to be shared and/or edited by multiple people.

It's nice to have the ability for four or more people to be in a spreadsheet at the same time making edits. That's rare, but solves some past issues.

What's wrong with the included office suite?

If it's collaborative software that's needed, I second the motion for Google Docs.

Libreoffice only requires Java for some minor features and can be run successfully without.

I have been using LibreOffice, Mac version, for years, to replace Word and Excel. It has done everything I need.

I have some database stuff in FileMaker, when I have time I might try to convert it to the LibreOffice database app.

NeoOffice is a Mac centric port of LibreOffice, has more integration with Mac features, and has an interface that conforms to Apple's look and feel.

MacOS includes their own office suite apps. “Pages” (Word), “Numbers” (Excel), and “Keynote” (PowerPoint). All are full featured, powerful apps that can open MS Office files AND save to MS Office formats.

One of the nice things about a Mac that helps to counter the higher initial cost is the included fully functional programs and NEVER paying for an OS upgrade.

This. I use Apple's offerings for light stuff; but I switched all my bigger stuff to NeoOffice.

Yes and no. I used LO for a while on mac, and found that it was a pretty good program until (1) you needed some really funky features for adding pictures to documents, or were doing complex slides or (2) you needed to send the file to someone who had a MS Office environment for further editing.

So features are pretty good, but compatibility isn't in my now two year out of date experience.

Try it, that’s the only way you can tell. It’s free. Just download it.

Neo Office and LibreOffice are descendants of Open Office, the three have common DNA. I used Open Office in the past, then tried LibreOffice, which I now use. It meets my needs.

If you are exchanging documents, spreadsheets, etc. with someone who uses MS office, LibreOffice gives you the option of saving in MS office format when you create or edit.

My Macbook Pro is coming up on ten years old. They are pricey, but they last. Although I can't speak on their current builds.

For MacOS:

* For certain features of the software - but not most - Java is required. Java is notably required for Base.
* Due to an issue, there are the following restrictions with Java: on macOS 10.10 and newer, JRE isn't found, JDK is required.

https://www.libreoffice.org/ge...system-requirements/

Currently, Base is the LO component that I really want, so more than a minor feature for me. I don’t really understand “JRE isn't found”, but I’m guessing that it means JDK must be installed instead of (or in addition to?) JRE.

I really don't mind having the Java SDK installed on my Macs, and available only for apps. What you really need to do is go into the configuration and make sure the Java plugin for browsers is turned OFF. Java from the web is the real danger.

I like the built in iOffice suite that comes with the Mac. It doesn't do everything that MS Office does, but unless you're a hardcore power user, it does everything I need. It has the integration with iCloud and the web app works well as does the same apps on the iPhone.

I did use libreoffice a few years back. It worked well enough, but once in a while it had the same issue most open source software does. Having neckbeards design a UI.

I have not found a downloadable, free, ready-to-install version of neoOffice to run on OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan.

Everything I found is either $, or build-it-yourself. Maybe I missed one, someplace.

LibreOffice is downloadable for free, ready to go to work.
