We are in the time of the year when it becomes prohibited from removing bats. The adults are breeding and having baby bats. The baby bats can't leave on their own, so if you remove and exclude the adults, the babies will be left behind to die. Removal is generally allowed in August through March, I believe.

Also, removal is pointless unless permanent exclusion is also done. Bats will return to a place they think is a good home. And they only need 1/4 inch opening to get in. That's why exclusion is a difficult and expensive process.

Lastly, once the bats are removed, the area they were in needs to be fully sanitized. They can leave behind quite the mess.

We have a home in western North Carolina in the mountains. One night about 3 a.m. my wife wakes me and says she hears something in the room. I fumble for my glasses and turn on the light and see a bat flying race laps around the room. Go fast, turn left. Our two terrier mixes Worthless and Useless who were in the bed with us immediately sprung into action. Worthless jumped off the bed, ran out the door and down the stairs and hid under the couch in the living room. Useless got under the blankets with my wife. (later, to add insult to injury, it occurred to me they were the only ones in the room with rabies vaccinations) I opened sliding glass doors to our balcony hoping that with their finely developed sense of radar the bat would perceive the escape route and fly out but no go. I grabbed a broom and as the bat went past me still flying laps kept swinging at it. This went on for about 20 minutes and I was working up a good sweat despite it being December and the open balcony doors. Eventually, miraculously, I finally connected and knocked it down to the floor where I proceeded to beat it to death, still have dents in the wood from that, and put on gloves to bag and remove the pieces. Next day called a critter control guy who found where the bat had entered the house, determined there were no others in the space and sealed the opening.
