New iPhone problem: music quits if I leave the app source
I have two apps for classical music: KUSC and WQXR. Both play the music that you’d hear if you tuned into those stations on an FM radio.

But, starting this morning, the music stops if I leave either of those apps, e.g., to browse SigForum. Or even if I turn off the screen by briefly pressing the button on the right side of the iPhone. Happens whether or not my iPhone is connected to a power source. I haven’t changed anything on my iPhone recently (that I know of).

That problem doesn’t occur if the source is Apple Music or Amazon Music.

I’ve looked in the iPhone Settings, including the settings for the KUSC and WQXR apps, but don’t see any control that might be the cause.

Well, son of a gun, the problem has now ceased with the WQXR app, but it still occurs with the KUSC app.

I waited a couple of hours before posting this to see if the KUSC app would heal itself, as the WQXR app did, but it didn’t. A puzzle – any suggestions?

Are you streaming the audio to an external Bluetooth speaker, by chance? If so...the Bluetooth may be picking up another Bluetooth connection and, being unable to connect, is stopping the music.
I've had this happen when listening through the speakers in my phone, and one of our cars is started up (by another person). The iPhone then connects to the Bluetooth signal from the car.
Or, it picks up our smart TV's bluetooth signal, and tries to connect to it.
Just a suggestion.

Have you done a hard reset yet?

Could be a memory issue and a hard reset will clear it (or not Smile )

When you exit the app try swiping slowly from the bottom of the screen instead of a normal swipe. I had the same problem with the Sirius app and figured it out by accident.

I just tried a hard reset (powered-down the phone, then restarted). And that fixed my problem!

I’ll remember to perform a hard reset for any weird iPhone issue. Probably it would be a good practice to do a hard reset every week.

In my years of experience with iPhones, a hard reset will almost always fix any problem that comes up.

It's possible that it is related to power saving settings.

Least that sounds similar to the behavior observed on android phones.

Of course, if you got it fixed for now, there isn't much need to keep investigating.

That's where I learned the reset trick, long before cell phones came along and a cell phone is nothing more than a compact computer.
