I'm thinking they would have had a hard time explaining why their dog had a heart attack and died at the end of his last shift....
Maybe 4-5 tennis balls would have been better...

When an airline pilot retires, two fire engines cross streams from water cannons over the aircraft as it taxies in. I think this was the dog equivalent.
When training the dogs throughout their career, participants walk through security with contraband that may be drugs or explosives. When the dog hits on it, a tennis ball is thrown at the bag or person, and the dog catches the toy; a reward for making a hit. The tennis balls are a cascade of final rewards. Looks like he hit the motherlode.
