Awhile back, I asked for advice on a walking stick. A Shillelagh was recommended by more than one person. So I figured I could make one myself. Any tips or advice? I found a nice piece of oak that is relatively straight, and I’m straightening it now. I realize this is a time intensive process, but I have time. I’m undecided if I want to drill the top and add lead. Lol. Anything I need to know? ----------------- I apologize now...

Take a two inch firehose, cut it to about 2.5' and pull out the rubber liner. Wrap one end with duct tape to create a handle. Beat every wog on the ass who passes your way (but only on Wog Day). ![]() Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. And beat the ones with a red S on the back of their shirt extra hard. I still remember Wog day 32 years later. __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154

The proper way would be to find an overturned tree. Oak, Hickory, Birch.... something sturdy and tough. Look at the root ball. Find something workable, and start cutting & sanding. Maybe a nice brass tip at the bottom. (I wonder how a cut down .50 or a high brass 12ga would work?) ______________________________________________________________________ "When its time to shoot, shoot. At this point, I don’t know if I will need to add weight to it. The limb is large enough, I can shave it down to create the ball head. I like the idea of the .50 cal or 12 gauge shell. I could pin or use a screw to hold it in place, and replace as needed. And the fire hose idea as well. I’m looking forward to the next Wog Day. Thank you, Gentlemen!!! ----------------- I apologize now...

Add the lead slowly, or it will set your wood on fire. I added 2" of lead to the end of this baton, then capped the 1/2" hole with a walnut plug. ![]() When in doubt, mumble

FYI, the firehose shillelagh is wielded by trusty shellbacks on slimy pollywogs, not miscreants needing a real whacking. https://military.wikia.org/wik...ne-crossing_ceremony NRA Life Member - "Fear God and Dreadnaught"

And, don't forget the Irish Whisky! Apply to both the Shillelagh and its maker in between sandings. Scotch will do in an emergency.

Anytime I hear mention of a shillelagh I think of this beautiful song...especially the part about them using their shillelaghs. ![]() Background for those unfamiliar with the song: In the song, the narrator and his cousin, Arthur McBride were taking a walk when they were approached by three British military recruiters, a recruiting sergeant, a Corporal and a young drummer. The recruiters attempt to induce the narrator and Arthur McBride into military service, extolling the virtues of serving the King, having money to spend, and wearing nice clothes. Arthur McBride tells the recruiter, if they joined, the clothes would merely be loaned to them and that they would be made to go to war in France where they would certainly be killed. The recruiter, taking offence at Arthur's disrespect of the offer, becomes angry at Arthur and the narrator, and threatens to use his sword on them. Then, Arthur and the narrator use their shillelaghs to hit the recruiters and the drummer over their heads, and after doing so, in some variations of the lyrics, take their pouch of money, and throw their swords and the drummer's drum into the ocean. This is one of the more tame versions of the song. Link to original video: https://youtu.be/VBdywzKD2Jw ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The price of liberty and even of common humanity is eternal vigilance

As a shellback, I approve this message. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Told cops where to go for over 29 years…![]() |
I had been thinking about getting an Decided to take a chance on the Cold Steel Blackthorn suggested by depusm12. Seems they were out of stock damn near everywhere but came across it at Midway USA. It was even on sale for $32 instead of $49 but, more importantly, I got the last one in stock. For some reason getting the last one always makes it sweeter for me. Anyway, arrived today and I must say it will definitely get someone’s attention if you tap ‘em on the noggin with it. ![]() Seems there are some YouTube vids for using it for defensive purposes, will give those a watch soon. Only have two nits to pick at this point. First - the tip is hard polymer and will slip on a smooth floor. I know this for a fact as we have laminate flooring and it immediately tried to slip out from under as I put some weight on it. This is a problem for a walking stick/cane. Second - and this is really my issue not the stick’s, it is about two inches too long. I am 5’8” and to use as a cane, it is just a touch too tall. I am thinking I might solve both issues by cutting it down 1/2-1” above the stock tip (seems to be glued on?) and then putting a regular rubber cane tip on it for better traction. What part of "...Shall not be infringed" don't you understand??? ![]()

I have that same stick. Due to my height I did go to the pharmacy and get the rubber foot for the cane ![]() __________________________ More blessed than I deserve. http://davesphotography7055.zenfolio.com/f238091154
