Just curious if anyone else makes their hot chocolate with coffee? I can't drink it any other way now. Any way hope you all have a Merry Christmas!

Back in my working days, I got into a bad...but tasty habit of making a strong dark roast instant coffee with a packet of hot chocolate, half n' half, cinnamon and a dash of red pepper. It was breakfast and dessert all rolled into one.

Poor man's mocha. Been having my coffee that way for years now. A teaspoon each of instant coffee and Swiss Miss. No marshmallows though, those only go in pure hot chocolate.

...back about 47 years ago, I first encountered that drink when someone told me to mix my instant coffee packet, sugar, creamer, and cocoa packet from a C-ration into the canteen cup, heat, and enjoy! Very comforting drink when you're cold and damp.

Why wouldn’t it be just mocha instead of “poor man’s mocha?” Isn’t that what mocha is - coffee plus chocolate?

Mocha is what I order when I’m at a cafe which isn’t frequent. I plan to switch to a cappuccino.

I started trying to mix a packet of hot chocolate with my mug of coffee a number of years ago. I stuck with it during the cold months, but when it warmed up, I gave up both. I do go back once in a great while.

Typically, to be a mocha (aka a chocolate latte) there are two differences:
  • chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce not hot cocoa powder from a pouch.
  • frothed milk poured over the chocolate and coffee mixture

  • Thanks for the info. I guess I'm not particular when it's my wife making it. I'll keep this info to myself; I want to be drinking it, not wearing it.

That's a wise route. On a similar note, if a woman shows you her new earrings it's not wise to go to your tackle box and return exclaiming, "I have the matching one!"

Not hot but cold. Years ago I used to stop at a worn down Dairy Queen in West Palm Beach for a chocolate malt milk shake. One of the only places that had real malt powder. One time the old lady asked if I would like to add coffee to it. I said 'Why yes, yes I would". Turned out to be one of the best milk shakes I ever had. Got it like that from then on.

I use Ghirardelli cocoa powder and morsels with heavy cream sugar and milk. It's amazing.
