We were there in the summer of 2004 as well, did the Arizona tour and the Missouri later in the trip. I've also seen the Wisconsin in Norfolk.
Impressive ships, the Iowa Class BBs, even considering I have served on 3 aircraft carriers. I had a Great Uncle who served on Destroyers in the Pacific in WW2, he never said much other than the Battleships were big and rode the sea better (his ship was in the Typhoon Cobra and they were lucky to survive - if the boiler had gone out / lost power, they'd have been done for - 3 other Destroyers capsized and sank)...

I imagine it would be nerve shattering.
We fired jeep mounted 105 Howitzers back in the day. When my turn came to be the rear observer (making sure no one was in the back-blast area) and standing right next to the gun, I actually didn't know if I was dead or alive when the dust cleared. This was nothing compared to the guns on that ship. Here is a pic of one.
That's a 105mm recoilless rifle, not a howitzer.
Was wondering if anyone was going to pick up on that. Either 105 or 106mm.

Seriously...I liked that movie. The idea of a retired WW2 era battleship being tossed back into service made for a good story line.
One of the Iowas got hollard at for shooting sand bags while in Japan or Hawaii..

rtquigI have spent several nights in the New Jersey BB62 as a Boy Scout leader. Informative tours, very impressive. We got to go inside the turrets of the 16" guns and the 5" guns .

You are quite right. Don't know why I said Howitzer. That gun was mounted on a two wheel rig type trailer that they towed around.
Thanks for pointing that out.
