Can a Traeger replace a grill and a smoker? Login/Join

I currently have a Weber Genesis E-310 natural gas and an electric smoker. The Weber is natural gas but we're moving and the new deck isn't plumbed for gas. So I was thinking of selling both and maybe getting a Traeger. Do you all think that would be a good idea? I'm just not sure if the Traeger gets hot enough to sear. What do you all think? Or is there something else you'd suggest?

Thanks!

No, it does not get hot enough to sear.

I had a Traeger for about 10 years and recently switched to a Rec Tec. The Traeger peaked at 465 degrees. I can get the Rec Tec up to 550-ish. It’s built of better materials too.

I prefer pellet grills over gas. It takes longer to cook food but the food that comes off tastes much better. Even pizza. It’s easy to do pulled pork and perfect ribs.

Consider that before switching.

I have an egg and a Traeger. The only thing you can’t do with a Traeger is sear. Having said that, most folks don’t sear, or if they think they do, they do it wrong.

If I could only keep one device between a grill, a Traeger and an egg, it would be the Traeger by a mile. It’s by far my most used.

You can sear in a cast iron pan on the stove if need be. A pellet grill is the most versatile and easiest to use if you have an outlet handy.

If I could only have one cooker it would be a pellet grill. I sold my BGE after having my pellet grill for about a year. I have a Weber gas grill that I use to sear or do basic things like flash my ribs or cook hamburgers, hotdogs and even brats sometimes.

A Green Mountain Grill can go up to 500deg, combined with grill grates and the open hole grease tray design it can actually grill pretty well. I still keep a cheap gas grill nearby only to put a finishing char on my tri tips.
If I were you I would keep the Weber/gas grill and get a Pellet smoker of your choice.

Camp Chef pellet grill with sear box, it will do what you want in one package. They offer military discounts if you call them.

My pellet smoker is my most used device (Smoking and "oven" cooking), however, I still do my grilling on a Weber Kettle for steaks, burgers, chops and rotisserie. Well worth having a pellet grill around for its ease, flavor and versatility. My wife uses it almost exclusively in the summer months in place of the oven including bread products.

I still prefer steaks and brats on a regular grill, but I use my pellet grill for almost everything else. Like others have said it doesn't sear, but you can get around that with cast iron and an oven or with a sear box. It also doesn't really like temperatures over 350. It will go to 450-475, but it's like driving a car as you get close to it's top speed. Those last few degrees take a long time, and the recovery time is pretty long if I have to open the door.

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

But you can get parts (manifold and hose) from Weber to convert it back to run on propane pretty easily I think?

Uh huh, does that stop you from using a propane tank? Pretty sure you can swap out parts. If not buy a cheap gas grill and sell the weber.

Here’s what I referred to, the sear box will hit 700 degrees. A reverse seared steak tastes great, smoke on the pellet grill until about 10 degrees from final temp, throw on sear box to finish up.

I also have a 310 plumbed in to my natural gas. Love it. I had an charcoal offset smoker (rusted out), then went to an electric Masterbuilt that lasted al of two years. I went back to a heavier charcoal offset. I could not duplicate the flavor of charcoal when it came to smoking. I could never get the low and slow with my Weber. But then I have never used a pellet cooker.
