Having worked the LE side, EMS and Fire, we try to do minimal damage when entering. If you have time, Through the Lock techniques are used. If I have a med alert with no response, Smoke showing or active conflict within the residence or building, time is a factor. Then the means of fastest entry applies. Through the lock techniques are subtle, We can put to door back into service most times. The rest take the lock being restored by a locksmith.

My question is, if a search warrant is issued, and they find nothing, but they damage my home, how is that right? Not talking about legaleze here, just right and wrong. In other words, you get a search warrant but it's typed for my address, 120 NoCrack Lane, instead of the crack dealer's at 120 NeedCrack Lane. You bust my door in, and it's the address on the warrant, but it's wrong. Also, if someone SWATs me and you bust in my door and I'm innocent, I still get to pay to fix my door? Trying to understand the nuance of it.

Be glad you are not in Houston, a busted door will be the least of your problems if you survive.

Damn right. I'm a traveler, so if they kick in my door, they WILL pay to fix it. Wink

Coming back to this...if it's not a dynamic entry search warrant or blood curdling screams, we are going to check every door/window to try to find an unlocked one before we go in, and a supervisor will be involved in the decision to enter (except for the blood curdling scream situation).

Usually around here the fire department beats us to the residence and does their thing. If we are doing a welfare check and there is no obvious emergency, we will wait for a family member to get there with a key, or friend, landlord, etc.

That said, forced entry is not uncommon.

About warrants at wrong locations...having typed up and served several warrants in my career, it absolutely blows my mind that anyone can screw one up. We would have multiple pictures, physical surveillance going on, etc. The only times I got nervous about it was in poorly identified housing projects/apartments. But for those we made sure that whoever had point knew precisely where he was going.

Knowing what one is talking about is widely admired but not strictly required here.

Although sometimes distracting, there is often a certain entertainment value to this easy standard.

Nah. Bald1 just wants a new door, and figured if he got someone to call in a welfare check on him, he might get a free door out of it.
