Same here. Too much idiocy.

The only time I agreed with it was the 1986 Bears game against the Packers when a Packers player (Charles Martin) "body slammed" the Bears' Punky QB, Jim McMahon, ending McMahon's season.

I was sitting near some Packer fans who were yucking it up as McMahon was carried off the field. A Bears fan in front of us, a rather big fellow, stood up, turned around and said to them: "Sit your asses down and keep your mouths shut!". That got a round of applause from the rest of us. Big Grin

I live in the real world. They are facing each other in a heated argument and apparently had been for awhile.

Facing each other. Do you expect the guy to say 'Put up your dukes, good sir!' ?

No way a sucker punch. Old guy wasn't paying attention as he should have been.

Wasn't paying attention? The old guy was in the middle of a sentence when the punk suddenly threw a punch at him. It's the very definition of a sucker punch. Just because a punch comes from a person who is facing you doesn't mean it's not a sucker punch. What exactly did you expect the old guy--who was seated by the way--to do? Have his mitts up in a guarded position the whole time? Dodge the sudden punch like Mayweather?

As far as the old guy was concerned, he was in a heated verbal exchange. Not a fist fight.

But whatever, jdmb03 is right. This is getting silly.

Exactly.

Dumbest argument in the thread. You can use reason or force. That a-hole used force and should do time because of it.

Number one, can't stand assholes who stand up in front of you, you paid the same price for the seat, number two, if everybody sat the hell down everybody can see, number 3 is there any justification to beating the crap out of a 62 year old? I took my father for his 80th birthday to the Dayton 500 on it's 50th anniversary and do you think that for a moment those drunken assholes would sit down, every time I asked them politely to please sit down their looks got more and more belligerent to the point where there was going to be a confrontation... Saw the last 10 laps back at my parents home.

The loudest entity in this argument is the silence of the NFL and the Panthers management. Part of their job is to ensure everyone who goes has a good and safe time. Instead they're both very quiet. They seem to like the rabid fans and don't do anything to discourage the loudmouth types.

What they should be doing is banning the clown from their property and urging the local prosecutor to take a hard line on him and anyone else who causes trouble. All fans and especially the ones who are dumb enough to travel to out of state games need to be encouraged and protected from punks.

So has anyone heard anything from the team or the "owner" of the stadium? I would guess that palace was built with public funds. Why no calls for the perps public castration? At least that would change the debate and make it clear what he did was less that acceptable.

No way. I'm a lover not a fighter.

But I appreciate using the correct terms to describe things. Here is a sucker punch:

Was attacked like this once but I did not go down with the punch.

I stopped going to NFL games about 10-years ago when the stupidity was deafening. I much prefer attending a college football game. Much more congenial and enjoyable atmosphere.

The vast majority of attendees were knuckleheads, go the bathroom and there was a 50:50 chance a fight would breakout over something as dumb as somebody not stepping up to the urinal fast enough. Many of the attendees likened their allegiance of their favorite team to being apart of a gang, every glimpse of an opposing fan was met by aggressive near violent exchanges. Other fans who were around would give knowing glances and nods of approval, 'if you didn't want all this shit, you shouldn't have shown up' type of passive-aggressive attitudes. The next level were those 'fans' simply there to get into a fight. Roaming around with their friends bumping into anyone who would confront them, cutting lines, pushing everyone out of the way just to get a rise out of anyone who would challenge them.

While television coverage provides a much better perspective, I've weaned myself off of NFL in-general the last couple of years...of course it helps when your favorite team stinks.

A sucker punch is only a sucker punch if the person who gets hit is totally unaware there is or might be any conflict. If you see them coming, or are having tense words already, it's absolutely not a sucker punch. Had the dickhead simply turned around and punched the man without a word or action beforehand, then *that* is a sucker punch.

That said, what an asshole.

So heated verbal discourse is the new "Put up your dukes!"

Good grief.

Carolina Panthers statement on the incident:

“We have reviewed video tape of the incident and have identified the perpetrator. We are working with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department to pursue charges to the fullest extent of the law," Panthers officials released in a statement. "The Carolina Panthers are committed to a fan-friendly and family-friendly stadium experience. The behavior exhibited by the perpetrator is unacceptable and will not be condoned at Bank of America Stadium.”

So will said douche-bag be banned from the stadium? Inquiring minds want to know...

At one point there were so many fights and problems at the Eagles stadium that they had a small courtroom and a judge at the game to immediately settle the matter and either lock up the trouble makers or fine them on the spot.

traditional definition of a sucker punch.

What does that mean? there is no legal definition, nor is it a standard in the criminal charge.

The fact they were having a verbal discussion does not in any way give rise to the justification of a physical assault.

For this reason many fans stopped going to games preferring to sit at home and watch the game for free on their 50 inch tv.

I was fortunate and watched games from the press box for years. There you don't even raise your voice of even wear team apparel.

But this is what you get when fans tailgate hours before the game and then drink inside for another few hours.

So what was the NFL's solution? Stop serving beer in the 4th quarter. They will newer lose the revenue even is a few people die because of it.

Many years back in the old giant's stadium, we always had tailgate events for NFL clients.
One assho*e drunk in a car started driving like a crazy idiot smashing into trash cans and tables and chairs. I stopped the idiot and dragged him from the car getting the state police over. At that point, even his friends were disgusted with him. fortunately, he didn't kill anyone. that wasn't always the case at the games.
